The joy of alcohol on planes

I generally tend to go with the flow. if I feel like having a few (or more), I will. I can remember a QF flight Sydney to Qld about 6 years ago. A mate and I gave up our seats up near the front of WHY to a couple of whinging yanks so the FA could close the doors and get us on our way. As a token of their appreciation, they plied us full of alcohol for the flight - from memory we managed to down 6 beers each. Ah the memories!!

about a 1/2 way. Actually they claim it was 8.5 bottles... including two whole bottles which they say they drank in just 90 or so minutes (SIN-BKK).

I'm not a big drinker...maybe once every couple of months.

However I got stuck into the dom on SYD - BKK F flight earlier this year with another F flyer.

I fell asleep at some stage and woke up about two hours before landing. I had to go to the bathroom and wasn't feeling crash hot.

Turns out my drinking buddy was french...don't try and beat the French at their own game.

Seriously, I am not a proponent of such drinking but have "been there - done that".

If one has a built up substantial tolerance for alcohol - such drinking is indeed possible, even while maintaining a reasonable level of coherence.

If you're flying AA from LAX to LAS in F, you're going to have *at least* 4 minis of vodka/gin (50mL each) and a tan of tonic/mixer put down on your tray unless you try very hard to stop them.

It's their way of apologising for not having anything to serve you other than liquid and pretzels.

I've had 3 bottles over the course of 5-6 hours in the past. It's not beyond the realms of possibility, but I call BS.

I'm certainly no "wowser" when it comes to grog.....especially complimentary grog....but I'm somewhat aghast at firstly, someone who thinks consuming such a huge intake of alcohol on a plane is a good thing, and secondly at someone who thinks sculling Dom Pérignon is a good thing. Dom is a drink to be savoured and enjoyed, not quaffed like a Dan Murphy cleanskin!

All this story tells me is that 4B's* are alive and well, even in F, which is somewhat depressing in itself!

I believe I have been on four flights where the plane has run out of bubbles. I may have been partly responsible in each case (but never wholly)!

I think the truth is quite a few less than 96 (52 seems to be widely reported). Even though I love a drink I am not sure who bothers to keep count on these sorts of occasions & not sure why it is important

In my experience there is no finer champagne than the first glass on EK641 out of KBL. There is no finer upgrade than F on that flight and the jumbo glass of 2008 Dom that comes with it.

But after 8 weeks in dry Afghanistan, it would still be a marvellous drink if it was bloody Yellowtail.

Ok, I can tell you now. I had a glass of white in the lounge, champagne on boarding, another champagne pre-dinner, glass of red with dinner and a generous cognac after dinner. It affected me not a jot. I could have drunk more, but did not feel so inclined. Would have had another cognac if I'd been asked, but not so motivated as to call for another. Tried to settle down to sleep instead. ( J lie flat beds were less comfortable than I'd anticipated.)
