The Lounge MKY - A review from a FNQ regular.

Now that's about the third comment on this one! Where's Noob, who reminded me it's a regional lounge???? (;))

I still say a nice Raffles hotel ambiance with some (cheap) but very alluring Punkah fans would really set DJ apart from, not just Qantas, but set a standard (a very affordable standard) for the world.

Design can be very cost effective, but the lingering effect can write cheques..... this is what JB is on about....create a difference and the punters will back you. The huge cost in the MKY lounge was the lounge. A tropical inspired garden lounge (additionally to the "DJ" inspired formal lounge) would have been very unique, very practical, very memorable.......and for pittance!

It's a great idea but I think there may be more cost involved than meets the eye - Either way, I would love to see it :D

If its outdoors you'll need one hell of a fence to make sure nobody can get it, it is a sterile zone after all.

Mky airport has an outside area but it is not able to be accessed via the general public.

Correct. The biggest issue is the threat of someone from outside tossing something illegal over the fence to a person inside the sterile area. That was always one of the biggest issues with the barra pond outdoor area as it was not a sterile area and it was a concern that unscreened people could have easy access to those about to board. After many fence top reconfigurations it was solved by relocating the entry to the sterile area to now ensure that anyone in the barra bar area has first passed through security. What a sad world we now live in. All that being said it would not be a simple, nor cheap exercise to have an outdoor area off the new Lounge. Besides it would just encourage the smokers:mrgreen:, 'ducks for cover'

The relocation of the screening makes for an easy walk from the lounge to the outdoor area now, so I don't really see the need. Last visit I just sat outside as it at least had a spare seat unlike the QP.

Currently here. Nice regional lounge. Currently 3 pax . 2 staff.

Don't think there is much I can add to the comprehensive review by markis10.

A pleasant place to await a flight. Much more pleasant than the qf alternative.

You did make it Mal,

When we where talking at AFF drinks last night you where thinking of not going.

I thought you where planning a big night

Currently in the lounge and agree with Mal , this a great setup for a regional lounge. Very clean , well stocked and has that new smell about it . Just cracking open the 1st one for the day as I am here for the next 2 hours . Currently 2 PAX and 2 staff here. Well done VA. :D

Is it just me, or do the comments by gwilli1 and Mal, in stating that there were 2 or 3 guests in the lounge at their respective times, indicate that perhaps VA may not be making ends meet at this particular facility? Whilst I know that hundreds wouldn't fit in the lounge, given it's an 80-seat facility, should one not expect at least 10-20 people in there at any one time? If not, could it be said to be running sustainably? Perhaps, does Virgin need to provide a free lounge pass to all Mackay-originating passengers so that they know what's in the lounge to entice them just that little bit more...?

Considering they are comments on a public holiday and a weekend, I would suggest weekdays they are a tad busier.

Further to this I was 2 hours before my return flight to SYD & 90 mins before the next BNE flight when I posted. There was 8 PAX there (6 x BNE & 2 x SYD) just before the BNE flight boarded . It is a Saturday afternoon , when travel is on the lighter side . The BNE(E190) & SYD(738) flights where only about 70% capacity. I suspect as markis10 pointed out , it would be busier during the weekdays.

Lounge ended up being 15 pax by boarding time.. So about 10 percent of the plane.

I take it you're not one of the flouro brigade? Neither am I, but I do wonder why the need for your comment. Surely a frequent flyer is a frequent flyer regardless of their choice/need of particular type of clothes.

I don't have anything against anybody.

Having said that, some of those "fluoro guys" can be rowdy and swear alot, like these 3 guy in the Qantas lounge at Perth.

Despite being told twice by the Qantas manager at the lounge to "Mind the language" these 3 guys were using the cough* word like it was a vowel.

That is just as bad as those suits who feel the need to let everybody know their business conversations because they just made $20 million profit or something.

Well I mentioned the fluoros first.Flying out of MKY on a friday evening as I have on several occasions the fluoro reference is just a fact of life.Thats when most fly out of MKY.A bit like the many references to the suits flying out of a capital city in the early morning or evenings that has been mentioned many times on AFF.Just a fact, not a comment.

Despite being told twice by the Qantas manager at the lounge to "Mind the language" these 3 guys were using the cough* word like it was a vowel.

That speaks more about the lack of enforcement of the rules. Same applies to those very important business types who don't seen to understand the telephone carries voice signals across distance, they don't have to shout twice as loud to be heard.......or is it a case of DYKWIA!

the fluoro reference is just a fact of life.

I wasn't commenting so much about the flouro reference, more the bit about beers disappearing like water, or whatever it was. I've witnessed suits throwing back the "free" grog as well as any flouro and if I don't have to drive home at the other end, I often have a few too.......maybe I should pack a flouro shirt for those occasions .

I dislike blatant generalisations. Like everyone who flys LCC is a bogan, every one who flys in/out of OOL is a tourist AND a bogan, every one in a flouro shirt is uncouth and a drunk, everyone in a suit is a pillar of society.........all generalised rubbish.
