The number of AFFers you have met

An interesting list is how many AFF members have you met while overseas, and that list stands at 12, or how many AFF members phone numbers do you have, over 30.

Two AFFers overseas, both by chance and only one in an airport lounge.

Phone numbers - guessing around ~20.

Actually met in person - plenty at various events. There's also been quite a few chance lounge encounters.

If I had to start counting I wouldn't know. Too many alcohol filled evenings, and a lot of pointing with 'oh that's blah' without actually speaking to them or being formally introduced.

Needless to say, met some great people on here.

About 6 or 7 at a meeting here in Perth when Lindsay came over for one of his Meet a Moderator get togethers...

Met three. Have met Mal at the SYD F lounge and Bundy Bear and ian_baker58 in LHR galleries F. Looking forward to meeting more on my future travels.

Given how some behave online, I'd be scared to meet them in person, so for me, its a big fat ZERO!

I suppose you don't like surprises then, most if not all the AFF members I have met have been a very pleasant surprise, forum appearances can be so one dimensional.

God.... trying to remember names AND handles [whilst usually intoxicated] is too hard a task. I remember faces though, which isn't so helpful on a online forum

In fact I've had a certain AFF member on my FB for years now and I only found out the other week what his handle was... it came to a point where I was just too embarrassed to ask, thank god someone else asked the question and I finally found out

I think its the fact, that if we are on here, we are like minded people. Some like one side, some like the other, but we are all interested in the same things. I have met around 12 members, and every one of them have been great, decent people, with whom I enjoyed the time spent with them.

Plus they all like a beer, which helps
;)

there is no problem with disagreement, except when it gets nasty as it often seems to.

I've got no idea of how many i have now met.. the brisbane crew were the first lot, then some of the Melbourne ones. I still see several quite regularly and have had a great time with all.

looking forward to the xmas drinks at HSW!

I know I will not be able to convince you but believe me when I say that with most people what has been posted on AFF is not relevant.

Its ok if wilco doesn't want to meet us... Plenty of others on here...

Just like those who don't want to comp people into QPs unless your one of the seeming elite of society and insist on thinking the worst of people... I try not to waist my time with that and prefer to think the better of people, but that's ok as well...

How ppl act online and how ppl act in real life are seldom the same. You could easily imagine some of the posts on here being shouting matches had the same discussion been had in real life except in real life there are some other factors at play...

#1. No trolls, very few ppl sit there are add snipping comments in real life with the full intent of annoying people. Online such people are rife.

#2. Non verbal communication is entirely lost when posting on forums. This can cause issues when people think the key word in a post is a different one to the one the OP had chosen.

#3. Controversial subjects don't come up as much in real life. I've noticed that most of the talk has focused around "trip reports" or upcoming travel plans.

and finally

#4. The internet provides a level of anonymity which makes some ppl far more brave than they would ever be in real life. Very few people will go upto someone they barely know and insult them directly to their face, however on the internet such things are common.

I would add difficulties with verbal/written communication to that list. IRL a conversation is usually one consolidated discussion. Whereas a thread can often have 2 or 3 lines of discussion going simultaneously. It can be difficult to concentrate of a thread and keep track of what's going on, leading to confusion.

None! I have met one ex AFF member (who i also follow on twitter) in the VA BNE lounge and only found out he had quit AFF over a beer there. Reading how many of you have met up I'm now slightly embarrassed about this. I must correct this.
