In a pinch I have sharpened knives on the bottom of a ceramic mug (the unglazed bit). Have done this in holiday apartments when all the knives are hopeless, agree nothing worse than a dull knife.I never travel without my work leatherman and duct tape....comes in very handy wrapping stuff to take home.
If I go to nz, I'll take my chef and petty knife over....love to cook the mussels and I slice up my own sashimi. Cannot stand a dull knife....

If you have bulk stuff, like I've been carrying, make sure you seal it (maybe double) in ziploc bags in checked bags.
Sunglasses. I always think I'll get some in duty free on the way over, then don't get enough shopping time, and spend rest of trip squinting.
