The Operational Upgrade Thread

Opup from Y to J on AKL-MEL last week. Y was oversold. First opup from
QF in 2.5 years. Excellent service from jetconnect crew although food rather poor, new 738 J seats suck, and less legroom in row 1 than row 4.

Not that I was ungrateful, just in future I won't envy those in front of the curtain so much.

Hooley Dooley!!! - although it wasn't an OP-UP I flew 5 legs yesterday with the same two crew and on the last flight, they very kindly gave me a nice little note and a bottle of wine to take home with me "for flying the last 3 legs with them!".

My first ever random act of kindness from Q/CSM and it was so unexpected! They really were a fabulous crew though - very friendly and funny!

You'll have to be quick, MEL-JNB on VA ceases on Feb 24.

Maybe look at Etihad or dare I say Air Mauritius......

Thanks for letting me know, but that sucks. Their problem was the days they flew. Could do SAA (second thought no!) but all other options add too much time. If Singapore had better connections I would go that way

I've done the flight in J or PE on EK, QF and CX. I've also done it in Y on MH, SQ, and SAA. I liked the CX connection in HKG (from MEL)

Air Austral now fly this route with a stop in Reunion Island ex SYD on Tues and Sat - but I have not done it and I do not know about the connection.

First op-up for the year for me!

QF006, 23 Jan from FRA to SYD, going through the gate in SIN on came the red light.

Upgraded from Y (43H) to J (12J) for the SIN to SYD leg, and very welcome it was too! :D

Same here on QF6 from SIN to SYD on Jan 26th, upgraded from Y to J going through the gate, welcome red light and happy Australia Day :)

Purposely booked QF19 SYD/BNE early in January as I was to arrive in Sydney on LAN.

There was an aircraft substitution, where the A330-300 changed to a 767-300 (Dreamtine-configured of course). As the flight was going out full, 14 people had to be upgraded to what was going to be an empty Business class (very few rev bookings on this date). I was one of the lucky ones, had my boarding pass re-printed in Sydney and got 1A.

First ever op-up on QF and certainly most appreciated (especially as I was on an uber cheap O class airfare).

Cheers :)

Thanks Qantas - double upgrade

Very pleased last week to get not just one, but two upgrades from Y to J. WP status does seem to count.

Last week my son and I were travelling back from London in Y, LHR-HKG on BA, HKG-BNE on QF, with a day's stopover in Hong Kong. The BA flight never left the ground due to a technical fault and there was no backup aircraft, so we were put up in a hotel at LHR and eventually left 19 hours late. A bore, but these things happen.

We were sitting in the 1st lounge at HK (which has grown substantially since last time I was there) when the desk paged me and told me I'd been bumped up to J. I asked if my son could get the seat as it would be a thrill for him and they indicated we could swap on the plane. I expressed my gratitude and the charming Qantas staffer said 'You very important customer to us'.

Eventually we turn up at the gate where there are not one but two new boarding passes, putting us in adjacent seats in row 1. A decent end to a trip that started badly.

Are QF on a mission to be very, very nice to their WPs? Or was I just lucky?

Well I did my Xmas day experiment (forgot to post sooner). Flew Y for the first time in a long time on my ADL-SYD flight on the 25th Dec, just to see if I would get a xmas day op-up. Unfortunately not :(. Back to flying in J for me. Maybe I'll get another op-up to F one day....

Re: Thanks Qantas - double upgrade

QF do what they can when they can, and always invariably look after higher value pax.

Well done by the way

Re: Thanks Qantas - double upgrade

I hope it's a sign of things to come..

This little WP duck is yet to get any non points upgrades :(

The science of opups :)

I've been flying since 2004, with 35-55 Dom flights a year (pretty rare Int legs), all on Q and mostly red e-deal on the way over and flexi on the way back. Never once have I been OP-UP'd.

That's 0 from approx 2400-3600 flights.

Forgive my maths but isnt 55 * 7 around 385 (or 700+ if we are counting the 35 - 55 as returns?) rather than 3600?

Statistically still a 0% op up percentage though and the same as mine on QF. Only one Op Up - J -> F on an award after mrssimongr got sick on the inbound flight on BA and we had to delay by a day in LHR.

I blame the champagne I was drinking in the QP... I meant to write 0 from 240 to 360 (*eligible) flights.

Not 2400 to 3600.

So yes, statistically it doesn't make a difference... I'm still batting 0%

*Not all flights I flew, would be eligible for a last minute OP-UP, IMO, particularly the thoroughly empty flights or the flights where J doesn't really exist (teeny tiny planes where you can almost sit next to the pilot)

Extremely lucky especially with op-up for your son as well.

I had 4 op-ups from 60+ QF flights last year but that is ~4 more than most people. Then a Gold has one flight and gets an op-up and a Silver had their once in a blue moon flight and gets an op-up.

Makes no sense. Not that I can see anyway.

Good thing you don't care about upgrades.

I really do not care about upgrades. Honestly. I am extremely happy to fly in the cabin I paid to travel but if a Bronze or someone without status go upgraded at my expense then that is a different story. But we are now getting off-topic again.

Just wish I understood how the lottery was worked so I can manipulate to my advantage. ;).

QF010 - SIN - MEL
Upgraded from PE to J at the SATS First/Biz counter.
Very welcome, as i'm on zero sleep!

Incredibly, my first ever op-up was as a lowly Bronze flying with a colleague (also Bronze) HKG-SYD.

We'd been working for about 3 weeks non-stop and absolutely dead on our feet - flying Y wasn't going to be a problem as we could have slept through WWIII!!

Made our way to the gate, handed over my ticket - got that beep and then handed my J seat - same for my colleague. Totally unexpected, but certainly very welcome.

Appreciated the lie-flat bed, and slept the entire route. (Probably the *only* QF J flight where I've slept even though I've slid down the bed!!)

Very welcome, as i'm on zero sleep!

Also upgraded at the SATS First/Biz counter, PE to J on QF 32 SIN - SYD 29 January. No mention of an upgrade at the counter only noticed my boarding pass on the way to the first class lounge. Was also allocated 11A on the A380, not a bad seat at all. Thank you QF :)
