The Operational Upgrade Thread

Was just telling wife how stingy MH are with operational upgrades often with full Y and letting J run mostly empty and what do you know got an opup at checkin for lgk-kul as Y was full.

Was booked on an 'O' class cheap ticket, we are 2x QF OWE's and our infant.

Was told there may not be food for us as food was loaded on the previous flight from kul.

There was enough food in the end so signature satay it was :)

On Sunday went to SYD T2 with wife and daughter to get them checked in and also guest them into VA lounge as I was flying QF.

Walked over to SYD T3 via the car park and just as you get out of the car park there is a big sign with 3D on it. Never noticed it before. Thought that was a nice seat but I was in 4D for this flight.

Checked in a kiosk at T-33 minutes and go through security into Business lounge where I asked for boarding pass to be printed and handed boarding pass with seat 4D and seq 155. Relatively full flight as usual this time of the day. Got some party pies and a coke zero and sat down and my name was paged. Thought I'd forgotten something but was given boarding pass for 3D.

Now feeling guilty as wife and daughter in 16D on VA. :( I ordered a vodka and tomato juice [-] to celebrate the op-up[/-] as I was feeling sad for wife and daughter. Then I walked over to Qantas lounge and had another vodka and tomato juice before walking to gate 5.

On board the flight is not full. There are 2 spare seats in business. There is an elderly couple sitting in 4DE, I notice 4B vacant, 6E vacant and a few other vacant seats. After boarding wife sent SMS their flight had been delayed and there was a gate change. I have to stop being a cheapskate and book wife and daughter on my flights.

Not much in terms of food for this 5:00pm service but was given choice of lamb and rosemary pie, cheese and biscuits and soup. There was only 1 left of each of the first 2 choices and I had given first option to lady in 3F but she let me choose first anyway and I chose the pie. Also had a 150 lashes and a James Boag. Don't really like either hut beggars can't be choosers.

Turns out we arrived 10 minutes early in BNE and wife and daughter only ~15 minutes behind and luggage was out on carousel quickly and daughter's pram there as well. Easily made the 6:00pm last bus to Skygate so all ended well.

Only issue is daughter screamed/cried throughout flight again. Not good.

How do you guest somebody into the VA lounge if you are not flying with them on the day? Do you know something I don't know?
I've been posting this on AFF for a long time. A VA Platinum/Gold can guest anyone flying VA into the lounges and the Platinum/Gold does not need to be flying. I use premium lounge entry to check them in unless we are checking in a bag.

It is an unpublished benefit and I have never been refused.

Some have been refused - and have posted here recently. But I can confirm it works.
With all the changes including forced one at LAX, I hope this benefit remains

So its important to not announce it to the world.

Although I have not travelled VA for a while, as a VA WP I have always been able to guest in my +1 and child even if I was not flying.

Let's keep this unpublished benefit unpublished.

if I recall the refusal story was a WP who just wanted to read a paper in the lounge while waiting for some passengers to arrive

Yes know the story quite well. I think you'll find VA has allowed this from beginning and will likely stay this way for some time.

Thanks for that, not that I ever go in with wife when she travels by herself but will keep it in mind.

QF44 DPS-SYD last night. Settled into my row4 seat, NC headphones on and was just about to shut my eyes when a ground crew in hi-vis stopped and waved 1A BP at me. Yes please! No idea what triggered the op-up as Y was not completely full but I'm over the moon. Thanks, QF!

Have to say though, even WP status wouldn't get me onto a 737 for a flight that long. :p

Well, you can always fly Deathstar as that's the only other option that doesn't use the 737 to /from the DPS. ;)
Believe it or not, I actually paid less for the QF flight than what I would on JQ.

I've done this flight. Return in J.

I'd say the soft product is perhaps better than on the A330/A380s. It's the same international offerings but with more personal attention in the small cabin.

The hard product is of course the big let down. But it's fine for day flights.

I would welcome feedback as to whether I am likely to get an upgrade and when I might hear about it.

QF7 SYD-DFW 29 Mar 17 return QF8 DFW-SYD 13 Apr 17

QC member, QFF Bronze, zero status credits, booked PE T class, requested upgrade in May 16.

TIA

An Op Up is a different thing to a points upgrade, so not in the right thread.

You may be talking only about the QF group, but GA fly an A332 on GA714 from DPS to SYD if I am not mistaken, so there is a widebody choice if you want it. I have not travelled on GA but unlike 20 years ago there are now quite a lot of good reviews of GA flights on the Internet.
