I understood that the trip that would have earned the extra 740 SCs required for Plat is not going to go ahead. The option now is for a simple SYD-JNB-SYD that would earn 320 SCs (not enough for Plat) and provide the additional 2 QF flights to ensure Gold status is retained. Without those two QF flights, they risk losing all QF FF status. I have read (but not confirmed) that there is no soft landing for those who miss the 4 QF segment requirement.

Are you sure? If you read post #8 above from alect it would appear he had a 'soft landing' as he had 0 SCs last membership year with no flights credited to QF and dropped from Platinum to Gold.

no, I am not sure, which is why I statede that it is not confirmed. There are reports of both soft and hard landings, and I have no insight as to what QF may use to make the determination for either. Also note that Alec does hold Lifetime Silver status. I have no insight as to whether this has an impact when it comes to QF's status evaluation process.
