I recently watched one of those 5-minute "destination guide" videos on a flight where they give you a few tips for your destination. I won't name the destination, but this particular video was full of phrases like "unimaginable possibilities", "has it all", "breathtaking" and said its "mesmerizing beauty will render you speechless". You know, all the tourism marketing cliches.

But the one line that really grated me was "this is the perfect destination for everyone". I mean, every destination is different and people like different things. Which is great - variety is the spice of life. Some people like warm weather, some like snow, etc. I get that they were trying to say that the destination has lots to offer to different types of people, but how can a place be the perfect destination for every single person?

Honestly, when marketers use lines like this I think it just reduces their credibility IMHO. It's a bit like a restaurant that claims to have the best of every kind of food. It would be more believable if they said "we have the best pasta".

Please tell me where I'm going wrong. Maybe there is a destination that's perfect for everyone after all?

The answer to this really depends on where you are now (ie living). Exotic to some is ho hum to others and can depend on where else you have visited.

But let's say you are living in a major Australian city then for many it would be a tropical destination / island - can you really go past North Queensland or the Kimberly's ?

God, no. It's on my 'please don't make me go there' list 🤣

Haha my wife and I have been to India many times. But.. I am yet to convince any friends or family to come with us. To quote my father, "India? That's the last place I'd want to visit!"

However, the typical Bali or pacific island resort holiday doesn't appeal at all to us. Sitting around a pool or on a beach all day I'd find incredibly boring, we can do that in Australia for free 😂. Each to their own though, but I reckon a one size fits all destination is prob not a thing to answer Matt's original ponderings.

I saw this mind blowing scene when the computer booted up after BING started to utilise AI

It was the idyllic place for me

Unfortunate that it gave me champagne dreams when the reality was plain old fake.

First you need to define what do we mean by a destination? Is it a location you travel into, accommodate there and then explore from your base. In this sense, naming a whole country would be too much.

E.g. any of the capital cities in Australia could tick a lot of boxes: you've got food, culture, sports and nature within reach (or a day trip away). From that viewpoint, you have enjoyable trips in many, many locations.

But if you take a family of five with kindy-aged kids and a fussy & moody teenager and parents with different interests, it might be a stretch to find a "perfect" destination. And even if you did, every destination can have its shortfalls. It's all in the eye of the beholder what you can find and get out of a location.

The video I was referring to in my opening post was about an entire country. (Not a huge country, admittedly, but it is large enough to have one domestic flight route.)

Ticks all my checkboxes except for the toilet situation and the street toilet situation which would lead to me only venturing into the arrivals hall take a look at outside life through the automatic door or wherever my bladder can take me before it bursts before flying back in the same direction.

+1 and I visited India earlier this year and would happily return. The street food is amazing. Didn't even run the gauntlet out of me.
I believe there’s a current class-action one can partake in, should they eat food in India and not be subjected to 3 days of uncontrollable diarrhea. It’s totally against expectation & what you paid for!

I believe it's called the curry belly. What comes in must come out (same colour and consistency) 🤣 🤣

Possibly lost in translation from Spanish to English 😉
