The Pinot Noir & Grenache Thread

Gourmet Traveller Wine just rated Mike Press 2015 Pinot best Pinot under $20. I have to agree, previously mentioning how much I enjoyed this wine.
I did give an AFFer a bottle to review but am still waiting (hint hint)

Ok Pinot gurus. Need some advice on a quality reasonably priced Pinot Noir. Have to take some OS shortly but have zero clue when it comes to Pinots. The recipient loves wines from the Burgundy region in France, so am I correct in assuming that Pinots are close to this? Sorry, Shiraz is my strong point......

Buzz, have noted the Mike Press 2015. Where can I buy this in Adelaide to try it out.....

Thanks all. SQ

Pinot Noir for red Burgundy and Chardonnay (actually Aligote too) for white.

As for what to take, that's a tough one. Burgundy really is the benchmark for those two varieties.

What sort of budget are you looking at?

Up to what $ value do you consider as reasonably priced?

edit; daver6 beat me to it :)

Thanks Daver6. I thought it might be a challenge. It's for my friend to give as a gift to a friend of hers who LOVES wines from the Burgundy region. She's from Oz and want to give them some wine from Oz that they might appreciate (we tried a Shiraz on the last visit - that's where we found that he loves the Burgundy region - information that probably would have been handy beforehand lol).

Budget is probably up to around $30-$35 per bottle, so any assistance greatly appreciated. I'll take one for the team and try before we take over :D

Assuming you are looking for around the $20-$30 price point; Clarence House Estate Pinot is a lovely drop and you can get it off Langtons Auctions for approx $22-$25 a bottle if you keep a sharp eye out. Allegedly it can be cellared for a couple of years too.

Pinots are subjective IMO, I love them :)

priced under $35 that I like are;

Blustery Banks
Tamar Ridge
Bream Creek
Holm Oak
Josef Chromy

Under ~$45 would add;
Winstead lot 7
Winstead lot 16
Spring Vale
Barringwood Mill Block
Pooley

The higher end Tassie Pinots I would recommend
Domane A
Tolpuddle
Freycinet
Home Hill Kelly's Reserve
Delamere Block 8
Wines for Joanie
Tamar Ridge single Block or reserve
Holm Oak The Wizzard

There are hundreds more and that's just in Tassie - I'm sure others will suggest mainland options.
https://www.pinotshop.com/ is worth a look for ideas, not often cheap though

Does this include white Burgundy (aka Chardonnay) or not?

I honestly think you'll be wasting your time trying to find an Australia Pinot in that price range that someone who loves red Burgundy will appreciate. Probably most price ranges to be honest. If you're prepared to double your price range then possibly I'd recommend the Tolpuddle Pinot.

If you're looking at white, perhaps something like the Voyager Estate Chardonnay should be available for a little over your budget.

If you want to give them something that Australian and that we probably do better than anyone, maybe consider a Hunter Valley Semillion.

Thanks Steady .... I could be drinking for days lol.

Very much appreciate the prompt reply.

Ok. I'll check with my friend re red or white but thought it was the red she wanted.

See how I go but do really appreciate the advice. Cheers SQ

Does she like Burgundy specifically (and has tried other Pinots and doesn't like them) or just likes Pinot in general? There's decent Pinot in Aus and NZ to try - but it's mostly a different style from my (limited) experience.
If they're happy to experiment with Aus Pinot, the Tolpuddle is good, Bass Philip, By Farr and various Mornington Penisula.

I'd recommend the Serrat Close Planted Pinot Noir 2015: https://www.serrat.com.au/wines/2015-pinot-noir

It's $42 a bottle direct. And possibly cheaper elsewhere.

It's a great wine. An excellent bargain. And has those French oaked tones your friend might like. It's not really Red Burgundy in style. But I think it's one of the best Pinots our fine Aus soils produce for your buck.

My little review is here if you wanted to have a look at what the man on the street thinks: http://www.vivino.com/users/warren-dav/reviews/60537521.

Buy 6. Gift 2 (one to share. One to cellar). And keep 4 back for yourself! You won't be disappointed (unless Pinot is not your thing).

I get it direct from the winery delivered to my door. It sells out pretty quickly. If you want less than a dozen just give them a ring and ask who sells it near you. There is a place on The Parade but it may be a bit far for you.

Not sure to be honest. It's a gift for a friend of hers who lives in Europe and loves wines from the Burgundy region in France. Might have a look at your suggestions though - thanks for that! :)

Thanks for that Wozza. Will add it to the list to try. Lucky I have a few weeks before departure - and not that I'm complaining about being the taste tester at all!

Aha. Thanks Buzz. I can't take a dozen, so might pop up to the Parade to grab a couple to try before I buy. Parade Cellars??
