The Pinot Noir & Grenache Thread

Thanks @qaz I’ve just bought 2 of the 2019 Domaine de Bellene Bourgogne Rouge Maison Dieu Vieilles Vignes (Pommard) on your suggestion and 2 of their Chardonnay as well. I got mine price matched at Different Drop (they have cheaper shopping - $10 for under $150, and free above $150). Links here if anyone needs them: Rogue and Chardonnay
no worries, somehow totally forgot about DD so glad you remembered/checked them, there's also a referral thread - note that unlike most of their/his other wines, that chardonnay isn't old-vine (Vieilles Vignes) - did you also consider/buy any Daniel Bouland beaujolais?

But to answer your other question, I love most Australian classics - Shiraz, cab sav, pinot and riesling are probably at the top. But my motivation for branching into French wine was to try something different and go in with an open mind. So really just after a broad mix to see what I like, and at probably around/under $50pb (hence trying the ones you mentioned above). By the way, that comparison list you have dug up and quoted is great - thanks !
the Whistle Stop Tour France Zoom by Melbourne Wine House is good value for the wines alone even without attending the session

couple of other burgundies @ Randall's:
  • 2019 Domaine Amiot-Servelle Bourgogne (Chambolle-Musigny) - AM86-89 - $59
  • 2019 Faiveley Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy - JS94, WA(WK)93 - $75
Best of all time? Faiveley 2019 - 1er Cru, Framboisiers, Vieilles Vignes and Bourgogne Rouge from $35.

Yarraloch Stephanie’s Dream Whole-Bunch Pinot Noir 2015
RRP $52.00 OFFER $25.90 @ Randells
Thanks for posting, was about to do the same. Wondering if anyone has tried this wine?
i've had the 2017 which was available via MWG - not a 97pt wine imo - the 2013 single vineyard that @The Warlock enjoyed enough to order more is still $15 direct in dozens (free MEL delivery, else $15)

Loving most ‘20 Victoria and Tas pinots so far, it’s been a stand out vintage for me since probably ‘15. Problem is such small yields.

Has anyone tried the ‘20 Hoddles 1ER yet? The estate is top notch.

Yes, very solid wine - I preferred it over the '17 which we had for comparison.

Liked it enough to order straight after and in the same little period we've tried Bass Philip, Holyman, Stoneyrise, etc.

Admittedly, I already had ordered some bottles of Holyman (x2) and Stoneyrise (x2) and also the base Hoddles (x1 of each).

Hi Qaz, I also picked up a bottle of ‘19 Bellene Bourgogne from a Brisbane retailer to road test. Might try it tonight or at least coravin a glass.
Keen to hear what you think @jrod , very little burgundy experience but also tossing up whether I get a couple

Having a couple glasses now. I drink mostly pinot and have a modest collection of burgundy and rate this one for the price. Dark crimson, medium+ body, great structure and approachable. A little bit sappy and stemy with dark earthy aniseed, mushroom and spice (in a good way) and ripe raspberry. Still quite fruit driven but it’s a little bit meatier than your usual pinot. Definitely punching well above it’s weight for a Bourgogne.

I’d happily recommend getting a couple bottles.

Joseph Faiveley Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2019 $29.90 in 6pk @ Boccaccio
I haven't had much burgundy, though may be catching the bug now, but this is the best Bourgogne Rouge I've had yet - different from, but as good as, some of my favourite pinot noirs, including 2017 Lethbridge, Bay of Fires, Hoddles Creek

Yes, very solid wine - I preferred it over the '17 which we had for comparison.
interesting - haven't had the 1er yet, nor either 2020, but the 2017 standard is my favourite

I'd really love to buy something, but the cheapest I like is $139-149 😬

Unfortunately no i did not buy any Beaujolais, tbh i didn't really know what i was looking for so I just jumped on the one you suggested. Will pay more attention and grab a couple bottles to sample next time i go through DD

Yeah I am a big fan of Tassie pinots, particularly from the Huon Valley. I have some Chatto which are great, as well as Elsewhere Vineyard which borders Chatto but it is in somewhat of a restorative stage as their vines were neglected for a period of time. But I do find it very hard to beat the Home Hill Kelly's Reserve Pinot - I highly recommend this one if anyone ever comes across it, but it is rarely on sale!

Pierrick Bouley was the only producer specifically named in William Kelley's Wine Advocate Burgundy report yesterday, which "includes a number of up-and-coming producers that should be on your radar, in particular Volnay’s young Pierrick Bouley" - these two vineyards are considered amongst the best Volnay 1er Crus, and his Volnays were rated as the best of the appellation by Burgundy specialist Bill Nanson

"The 2018 Côtes Du Rhône By Roger Sabon is a forward, charming effort that has loads of black raspberry and blackberry fruits as well as notes of cured meats, spice, and pepper. It has beautiful fruit, medium-bodied, no hard edges, and loads of upfront charm. It's ideal for drinking over the coming 2-4 years. 89 points, drink 2019 to 2023." Jeb Dunnuck.

Wine Advocate's William Kelley seems to consider Daniel Bouland Morgon Les Delys the best/value Beaujolais, rating it 96/94+/95/95+ for the 2017-2020 vintages, the latter of which have recently been released:
  • 2020 $47/$50 @ Prince Wine Store
  • 2019 $48 @ Auswine - possibly sold out
2020 $49 @ Wine Emporium - ends this Wednesday

i've had multiple people let me know that 2019 Domaine de Bellene Bourgogne Rouge Maison Dieu Vieilles Vignes (Pommard) is one of the best Bourgognes that they've had - $39.99 @ WineStar (price match @ Different Drop, Prince Wine Store, maybe Randall's)
also $39.99 @ Cru Bar
