Does AJ not know that QF's oneworld frenemy Qatar as well as Etihad run long haul A380 flights into and out of Australia (with a superior hard product)?

One could also argue that SQ flies long haul since they have A380 all the way to London.

This was from the July 2017 edition of the Qantas inflight magazine

"one of the only other" != "the only other"

I agree that it's weird wording though.

Weird wording. You could say only four carriers operate A380 out of Australia, and that would be correct. Or only Qantas and Emirates operate A380 out of Australia. But the wording you quote is bad. ;)

I saw that in the magazine last night (I only ever read the inflight magazines to see the CEO piece and the IFE/Map/Fleet section) and thought it odd as well.
13 carriers operate A380s. Most of them (9?) do, or have at some point, operated the type into Australia.

yes but the piece is written for the audience. Of course the focus is going to be on QF/EK. Sure, if you want to be accurate then that's a different issue, but he's (his ghost writer :) ) writing for a captive QF audience, and that clearly has to be taken into account - rightly or wrongly.

Besides the way I read it the emphasis is on "one of the" and "long haul" so the SQ's of this world probably don't factor in as long haul. QR and EY would be the obvious candidates here (I think KE may do the odd 380 rotation into SYD, but again probably not considered long haul in a pure sense though I call it borderline myself) so if you group QF and EK as one "block" then vs QR and EY "one of the..." more or less fits. It's all semantics and playing with words.. like statistics.. to mean anything, and just as easily be defended when challenged.

my 2 cents

Yeah, I noticed this too and re-read the sentence multiple times to make sense of it. With at least four A380 'long haul' carriers (not including SQ) it's a bit misleading.

HAHA, I actually noticed this yesterday on the way out from ZNE.

I definitely read it as "the only other carrier" and remember thinking it was a load of fluff.
