The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

I've got lounge passes setup for my wife and I for our flight next Tue thinking no worries, our 2.5 year old will come in tow, but I just read for the complimentary passes it's a no guest (including children) situation - from reading it can go either way, thought I'd check what peoples experiences have been at the moment, if any?
No experience, sorry, but check the lounge meet up thread for the day and someone might be able to guess one of you in.

Whats the SC earnings on a flight flying QF metal but booked as codeshare on another OW. In this case JL7883 (QF38).

Is the earnings as normal QF for SIN <> MEL ?

Managed to snag a paid upgrade to J for my flight back to Australia on AY for the segment HEL > SIN (800 Euros for those curious). I'm curious if anyone has had experience doing these upgrades before and in particular whether they earned status based on their original fare class (H - Flex in my case) or the upgraded fare (i.e. J). It would be nice if it was the latter since that would mean I would have earned just enough to qualify for World Platinum status after this trip so I can enjoy all the perks on my next trip taking place in a little over a week's time.

You'd have to think that it would be awarded on the upgraded class, as you paid for that class. Unfortunately in either case its probably unlikely to land in a week. Let us know how you go.

Unless it was re-ticketed, I would expect it to be treated like a points or bidding type of upgrade, and that it will still credit as Y.

Hopefully for your sake that’s not the case, but expect what you started with to avoid disappointment.

Cheers,
Matt.

That is what I expect will happen as the agent on the phone who processed the upgrade said it'll keep showing as economy ticket online but that the agent at the airport will ensure I'm seated in business. With that being said, I have encountered upgrades where I shouldn't have earned more but did.

For those curious, yes I did try the online upgrade system and it said since the ticket was purchased through a travel agent I must call them up to request an upgrade. And for those wondering no you can't use the web chat feature of FinnAir to do this, you must do something radical, I know. It's called picking up the phone and calling them. What was interesting is the agent looked to see if upgrades were available on the other sectors: FRA > HEL and SIN > SYD with AY and claimed there were none, which is surprising since when I checked EF AY had quite a few J seats available on that flight down to SYD (maybe it's a plating issue that is preventing the upgrade?).

Interestingly enough the flight was showing a relatively empty business class:

Whether it is worth spending 800 Euros to upgrade from economy to business on a 12 hour flight, I'll leave that up to the reader to decide. In my case, with this return trip consisting of three relatively long flights (FRA > HEL, HEL > SIN and SIN > SYD. Then in a little over a week I've got another trip going which involves the following flights over the 3 weeks that follow: SYD > DFW > PIT on AA, PIT > MSP on DL, MSP > PHX on AA, PHX > SFO on AA, SFO > LAX on AS, LAX > PDX > SEA > LAX on AS, LAX > SYD on AA. Aside from the LAX > LAX on AS trip in J, all sectors are in Y. So it would be nice to have the comfort of stretching my legs out for at least one sector.

Also of note, the A350 that FinnAir uses between SIN and HEL has just a USB-A port for charging in Economy. There is no power port for charging (that's only available in business class). In other words, if you are like me and have just USB-C cables you are out of luck. If someone could explain to me why they don't have power ports at economy seats, especially on long haul flights like this, I'd love to hear it. Heck, even my FinnAir flight from SYD > SIN on the A330 had a power point (side note, it was a unique FinnAir bird, it had a Kangaroo on the tail and the fuselage was painted with Qantas, whatever that is).

I suggest you consider something like this to attach to your USB type C only cables https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0C4Y2LTQQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

One other question: I'm flying FinnAir from Frankfurt to Sydney (connecting in Helsinki and Singapore). I just received word that my flight to Sydney has now been delayed by 12 hours meaning I'll be eligible for EU261. My question is who should I submit the EU261 compensation to: Qantas the operating carrier of the flight that will cause the delay, or FinnAir the marketing carrier of this flight, and the operating carrier of the flights to HEL and SIN?

If I'm mid-way through a Qantas classic reward, having flown SYD-HND and HND-SYD coming up, which I will not be taking, assuming no chance of a refund of the points? If not, is there any benefit in actually calling Qantas to cancel? Unable to do so online through MMB.

See clause 14.9.3:

You could forgo the return, but it will cause a bit of trouble, as you will get the many reminders to checkin online.
Not sure if you don't do OLCI or counter check in, will they then start calling your name, of the fact you don't checkin, negate the process.
Not sure if not used sectors are refundable, as to points used redemption.
Wait for the others to have their say.
So, this is a what if, its not a real life as in now scene?
You could just do a one way redemption to get up to HND.

See clause 14.9.3:
Suspected as much. Any anecdotal evidence of this being waived?

Real life scene - currently in Japan, was meant to fly back home next week, but instead will be going to the US for work.

Maybe call them then, but be expected to either wait a long time, or to explain yourself over, and/or do HUACA.
Hopefully it will work out for the plus. ie, in your favour when you do call/your call gets through to a competent CSA.
Depending on your QFF status of course, and if you want the points back, or could use it for other trips.
Not that I have done it, but good point that you brought it up here tho.

Assuming QF don’t come to the party; any chance you could buy the lost points back via QFF and claim as an expense via the company? I’ve done something similar in the past when work disrupted personal travel

Is anyone able to advise with regards to points club;
"Earn Status Credits on Qantas marketed Classic Flight Rewards+"

If you earn access to points club AFTER booking your classic flight reward seats, do you still obtain the SC associated with points club (assuming the class flight rewards seats occur in the same year).

ie.
Book classic flight rewards seats for 1-Dec on 01-Aug
Gain access to Points Club 01-Oct
Fly on 1-Dec

Do you earn the SC's?

Yes. SC earn is determined by date of travel.

So to earn SC on a classic award you need to be PC on the date of travel.

Just thought I'd provide an update here on my delayed flight out of SIN to SYD. I filled in the feedback form with Qantas claiming EU261 compensation (as the trip originated in the EU) and hotels. Today they came back and approved both the compensation and reimbursement for out of pocket expenses.

A good outcome!
