The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

A colleague of mine is a Qantas Club member and will be travelling abroad soon with their partner and child to South America. Everyone is seated in business class. I'm wondering, what baggage allowance would apply in this instance? Specifically, would everyone get 3 bags @ 32 kg since there is a Qantas Club member on the itinerary, or would it just be him that gets the added baggage allowance?

One other question if I may, these tickets were booked as a classic flight award. My colleague is looking to book their mother in law in business class on this flight as well, again as a classic award (as award availability just popped up). Would it be possible to simply add them to the itinerary, or would it need to be booked under a separate PNR? The reason I ask, is again related to baggage allowance.

I'm platinum and my wife had no status when we flew to Europe last year with Emirates in economy. We both got 32 kg, though this year, for a flight next year, I only see 30kg as baggage allowance.

Just to clarify they will be flying Qantas to South America.

Barring any other advice you might want to call the QFFF centre. There’s nothing I can find on the relevant pages that says the baggage allowance applies to all passengers on the booking. Which is not surprising… if a QC member was travelling with a party of 10 the baggage allowance would be very high.

You cannot add another passenger to an existing booking, so even if MIL is flying, it would need to be a separate PNR.

The other option would be to purchase one month of flexible qantas club membership? $99. Provided that includes the additional baggage.

Have they booked? The baggage allowance will be on the booking and it shows when you look for flights and go a little way through the process. I am planning and have gone through the process until just before payment. The baggage allowance shows for all passengers and Qantas holds the flight booking until midnight.

Officially, only the member with the benefit should get it. Sometimes there's some leniency but don't count on it.

Separate booking required - can be linked but not on the same PNR. QF can't add PAX to PNR only split off from memory.

I just checked my last ticket. As a platinum I had 50kg and my wife as a Bronze got 30kg with the same on the Qantas flights. The fair was flexi but not sure if that mattered.

Yes it did get bigger (I think last month) - at the expense of the QP members' space.

Hello everyone, newb question. I think I know the answer, but want to have it confirmed here please.

Flying BNE-AKL-BNE, arriving AKL at 1520, then departing AKL-BNE (same PNR) at 1635. Is this doable, given same PNR? Any potential issues, apart from the delayed inbound and missing outbound?

Assuming I get all BPs issued at BNE (including the AKL-BNE) leg, I don't think I need to clear immigration at AKL. Land at AKL, stay airside and go to the gate boarding AKL-BNE.

Am I missing something?

I’ve just flown MEL-NRT as NB QC, wife is NB. My allowance was 52kg, hers 40kg.
So I would say each passenger’s allowance is based on individual status.

I imagine you will need to go through International transfer, which is an X-ray and body scan. You can give immigration a miss. WLG doesn't seem to have international transfer so it is security and immigration then back again but I could be wrong.

Yup, just checked, but any liquids etc meet the same requirements as any other international departure.

If you’re out on 119 and coming back on 126, it’s the same aircraft. So that should eliminate a misconnect.

WLG is my home port so would never need an international transfer. It is possible to fly in in the afternoon from SYD and go back on the same flight, but I have never noticed an international transfer desk on arrival. You could also go to Brisbane, but not Melbourne or Fiji as those leave earlier than the Syd arrival. Though you could do a round trip from Melbourne.

In WLG immigration is just after the security scanner and x-ray is well after that so looks like you have to enter NZ.

Leaving Aus, dep Smartgate is easy.
But coming back, incoming Smartgate, it "might" decline, and you have to go through the staffed counter.
Just like the dom pax on an int flight, same day in and out on Smartgate, might need an ABF person to scan your passport.
Do come back and let us know how easy, coming back is.
I do go to NZ a lot, as its the cheapest "international (country)" from Aus to go to, but never on the same day.
Read somewhere that Smartgate can hiccup if dep and arr on the same day.
No more of that small ticket sized cardboard, its now a yellow slip with your mugshot.
Try the Smartgate machine on your way back, at BNE int, prior to immi processing, see what happens.
If "it does not compute", then counter needed, let us know anyway.
===---===
If you lucky, you will get the 330/787 later on in the year some days, BNE - AKL - BNE!
Hope they dont swap you to a 737!
Try to get a window seat, for the return, as the 787 will have bigger windows, and the Aus coastline coming in, will be great sight, esp on nigh fall.

I hear BNE flights from NZ are trialing electronic arrival card. Would that make it easier? I have done a day trip to SYD from WLG with no troubles, but that's coming into NZ and it was with a full business day in Sydney so enter Australia.

I wish to join AFF but had a bad experience a few years ago, I booked a flight with Qantas FF assistance by phone and paid 1,150,000 frequent flyer points for two people ( wife and I ) one way ticket from Adelaide to London healthrow Airport as “premiem economy” is this still the same ?
