The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

Hi everyone, I’ve booked a Qantas Classic Rewards economy flight from Brisbane-Dubai. The ticket number is EK as it’s an Emirates flight. I’m Qantas Points Club Plus so have complimentary Qantas Club membership through that. Can I access the Qantas or Emirates lounge in Brisbane prior to my flight?

Basic question: is there a limit to how many times one can change a QFF Classic Rewards flight online? Aware that it will cost 5000 points each time

MELB T1

I have my statusless +1 and +0.5 arriving to Melb this arvo, with a bit of a wait before their regional shuttle bus.

Does the domestic lounge in T1 allow access on arrival if I buy them a couple of passes?
They're J into Melb from BNE but I understand the Qantas lounge doesn't do on arrival (side eyes in Virgin.)

Sorry for such a basic question. I normally arrive into T3, so these rules are unfamiliar.

Unfortunately not.

The Parkroyal across the road however offers three-hour short stays for AUD109, or perhaps a visit to the restuarant/cafe for a meal there to pass some time?

Bummer, but great idea. Thanks!

Inconvenient timing of shuttle to depart exactly as they land, then not again for two hours.

Flying Sydney to Port Vila via Brisbane in June
Just went in to my bookings and notice that the Brisbane to Port Vila flight operated by Alliance Airlines, has had a time change. Now departing 1 hour earlier. I don't know when this changed but I received no notification of the flight change.

My concern is that it now leaves me 1hour 45 mins to transfer from the domestic terminal to the international terminal for security and passport control. Hopefully bags are checked through from Sydney.
Is this enough time? Do I catch the airport transfer bus or get a taxi?

Can't answer the transfer question @ellen10 - others may be able to assist.

We are MEL-BNE-VLI this week @ellen10 booked 1st time via Amex Travel using credit in October for DSC.
Had email notification from Qantas maybe Jan/Feb QF159/160 not happening after 30 March.

I was not happy with MCT shortened to 90 minutes now QF353/354 - gotta remember I mis-stepped in Lisbon and #5th metatarsal 🤭

Spoke to Amex Travel, pulled the age card and they semi reluctantly without penalty moved to flying the day before. I don't mind paying for airport hotel to avoid stress and injury.
My concern was a 6am Melbourne departure if this was delayed ......
Have been following their OTD , mostly on time.

Edit : notification was from Amex Travel on 18 February with QF160 for leg homeward.

Hello all. I have triumphantly returned to QF Gold status after dwelling in Qantas Club Silver land for a while. I have a query re classic award upgrade priority process for which I cannot seem to find answers anywhere (and apologies if they have already been covered and I have overlooked them).

I have some upcoming international travel booked with QF for which I previously placed a classic award upgrade request from Y to J on the QF website. This was requested when I was QC Silver. I understand the upgrades are handed out based on status (among other things). Will QF's system automatically recognise my new status (which would theoretically place me higher up the priority queue), or do I need to cancel the request and put it in again?

Just had an aircraft change from A330 to 737 for my Perth to Sydney flight in October. I’m on a rewards ticket. Is an aircraft type change sufficient cause to request a move to the QF34 787, or any other A330 for that day?

Are you in J? If so, it can't hurt to ask. You can easily push the huge change in product line.

I’d also check if there are available/allocated seats.

Last award seat PER-SYD I did, there was a swap after OLCI but the system had us stuck in 2K/4K (out on the wing of. 737!).

Unfortunately (for multiple reasons), the first leg was JQ DPS-PER and that probably screwed things up.

I've done Dom -> Int at BNE before, that should be enough time. I caught the transfer bus; make sure you're catching the correct one.

Does having a mixed cabin throw out the calculation of the points and fees for a reward seat booking?

I'm looking to book a one way trip from PEK to BNE through TPE using the multi-city tool for a relative, and wanted to ask if someone could explain how to the point cost is calculated by QANTAS.

The costs for the PEK-TPE segment are 14k points + ~$100 in Y and 30k points in J. Then for the 2nd leg of TPE-BNE it's 30.2k + ~$140 in Y and 75k in J. Booking the entire route in J only costs 90k in points vs 89k for a mix of Y + J. Total taxes+fees in both mixed and non-mixed cabins came to ~$305.

How come there's no 'discount' if you choose mixed cabin and also why does the total cash fee end up being higher than if added individually? I understand this isn't a glitch or anything wrong on QANTAS's end so just want to understand out of curiosity.

For many FF programs the highest cabin of service determines the price of the whole award. However, QF will price whichever is lowest… the sum of individual sectors OR the through fare.

In your example you just happen to have found a case where the sum of the two sectors is lower, but only by 1000 points.

You would benefit if you could find business class on the PEK-TPE sector, where the through fare (90k) would be lower than the sum of the two sectors (105k).

Thanks, interesting the way they do it then.

Yeah at least there's no shortage of PEK-TPE J on almost any day it looks like even if it's such a short flight and the fare calculation ends up being almost like a free upgrade.
But what is up with the cash fee portion though, why does it add up to a higher $305 instead of simply $240 if booked individually ?

I could understand if it was linked to the date your membership expires (i.e. you must apply before your membership date lapses) but I can't understand the logic. The date of my leave and the date my membership rolls over are fixed. The dont change and are not linked to my childs age. The outcome, had I applied when my child was 6 months old - would have meant my membership was extended for up to 18 months. Because I am doing it shortly after 6 months, it has been denied.
Did you end up pursuing this and/or getting a different outcome. I’m in the exact same situation - I actually wasn’t aware of status hold or id have done it as soon as I found out I was pregnant haha that status is precious. So devastated to lose it because I missed a cutoff date!
