You have not seen "a boarding" executed efficiently until you fly Virgin Blue or Tiger. In Australia, both these airlines now use hand held bar code scanners, so all you hear is beep, beep, beep… as people stream past to board (DJ & TT use two door boarding, as general procedure*, so quick processing at the gate doesn't tend to produce too much of a bottle neck further on). (* there are exceptions, e.g. ADL?)

It is excatly the same at AKL and WLG for DJ.

It's only QF in AKL and WLG that seem to have issues with A4 OLCI papers! Both times I used OLCI the agent had to hold me at the queue while they ripped my OLCI papers -- the two people I was travelling with were already near the end of the airbridge when they had finished ripping my OLCI paper to bits!

Not a very efficent prodcedure I must say. :-)

I've used the OLCI passes throughout Oz & NZ without issue. They seem to scan OK and not hold the stream up at all. The only time I have had issue is when OLCI first started and I used a fairly low quality printer.

Maybe, as someone else pointed out QF and DJ should provide laser printers for us all and eliminate the problem completely.

I have never had any issues - and i generally print my passes on the way to the airport with the printer in my car which is a fairly low quality one...

Hmm, that is one accessory I don;t have in my car. A printer.
 
That will be covered by the new Ink Surcharge to be included in the "taxes"

On a related topic - I am getting increasingly pissed off with Ticketek charging me a fee so that I am can print my own tickets at home - $3.95!!! There is no way to avoid a ticketing fee and the print your own is the cheapest option...
 
I used the Quickcheck machines in BNE back in February and I was issued a flimsy paper boarding pass. Couldn't wait to get to the Qantas Lounge to see if I could get it changed, which they did upon my request. My ego was extremely happier with the normal cardboard boarding pass.

Don't get me started on DJs idea of replacing traditional cardboard boarding passes with a variety of shopping dockets and flimsy paper printouts....

I am obviously lucky I never caught the keep the boarding pass bug, so I am not really fussed what they give me, as long as it lasts as long as it needs to

Maybe we could all be implanted with a RFID chip which could be used to identify us with paperless boarding passes, thus saving hundreds of tons of paper and hence trees, bleach, ink etc. A light to flash above your seat as you approach son you know where to sit.

Now this plan I like - could even be used in place of an ATM card :)

So they can auto-charge you for in-flight services such as using the toilet or reading the in-flight magazine? Ouch, that could be the start of a slippery user-pays slope!

These days the boarding pass needs to last as long as it takes the points to post to a FF account. Sometimes this could take weeks or months. If you are not careful how you store the shopping docket variety boarding pass the ink fades very quickly. Also paper boarding passes are more prone to damage kept in a pocket with other possessions for the duration of the flight.

And yes I also like to collect boarding passes just like some people collect bottle openers, coasters, coins, souvenir plates, ley rings etc from places they visit.

All? Would anyone seriously consider chip implants if these were an option? No thanks. And the same goes for iris/retina scans or barcoding....
 
These days the boarding pass needs to last as long as it takes the points to post to a FF account.

Doubtful for domestic QANTAS FFs. Just send them your itinerary (if they ever ask for anything), and then can look up whether youe boarded or not from the computer system.

The only time I've ever needed to send in BPs was for things like codeshare AA flights, where AA wouldn't have a record of me getting on one of their planes.

I have been through phases of collecting things, so I understand it (at the moment all I seem to have a collection of is expired plastic cards!). But since I never got the bug with boarding passes I don't need to figure out how to store them!
 
Mine are currently just lined up on my desk (note despite mild OCD I have yet to put them into chronological or airline or seat number order).

It is amazing how tatty some of them are...

At AKL the other week my online printout (NZ) had a rip, no where near the codes and it made a funny sound when they scanned it. So weird!
