We spent a night in Invercargill in Dec 2019, on our South Island road trip....this turned out to be our last OS trip. :( Saw the whole town and even drove to Bluff to see SI before we drove to Queenstown. It was quite expensive to get the 4 of us to SI (ferry or plane) and as we were short of time, skipped it. Good on you for taking your grandma to see a place she wanted to go to.

It's a shame you didn't go! Yes, the ferry is a bit expensive but it's still a whole lot cheaper than getting to Lord Howe Island, and you get a similar experience ;)

We met a few tourists on Stewart Island who had caught the ferry over in the morning for a day trip, returning in the afternoon.
