The view from my "office"

re: The view from my "office"

Leaving so soon? We don't arrive for another 6 days so no hurry to leave so we can fit.

Not yet - have another couple of days to go. Pity the stars didn't align...

You want me to book a taxi?

re: The view from my "office"

A bit more homely than the offices above, but the Taste of Tasmania, with Sydney-Hobart yachts (and other races) finishing just off where we were sitting was pretty acceptable on a lovely summers day.

I hadn't been for many years a) because I am usually up at Coles Bay at this time and b) it used to be an event crammed into one old waterfront cargo shed, and you had to 'guard' your seats because they were always scarce, and the place was packed. No thanks.

In the past couple of years they have expanded the event into the parks and lawns outside, spruced up the shed and introduced (limited) reserved seating :) . This immediately appealed to the DYKWIA in me, so I shouted a chunk of the extended family today. The event is free admission, but the reserved seats were $20 a pop. Ours were right on the water and I say it was worth it for a large grouop, knowing that there were always going to be the seats there, with no pressure to 'guard' them.

Inside the main shed its much less crowded:

Many stalls and more seats and tables in the parks nearby:

Our reserved table had great views of Sydney-Hobart yachts arriving:

Not to mention the food & wine :) . Soooo many oysters, boutique meats (pulled pork was my favourite), cheeses, and raspberries, raspberries and more raspberries!! With any numbers and types of Tasmanian wines :p

A short walk away is the Constitution Dock area where the Sydney-Hobart yachts tie up. The early arrivers are too bid for Constitution, so tie up in the marina. Boy, they are BIG!

This is line honours winner Comanche:

... very broad on the beam! (By the way, that's Elizabeth St Pier Serviced Apartments adjacent)

Looking across to Ragamuffin and Rambler:

Back at our table, a local finisher does a sail-past, really lapped up by the locals!! Another finisher in the background.

I love raspberries!! Haven't spent enough time in Tassie... How are the wine tour plans going RF?

Good question! I have been waiting for the dates for Dark mof_ to be announced, as it would be vastly optimal to have the Tassie wine tour during it. Still no dates, but its around the winter solstice, so will look closely at this soon.

Oh, cherries. Just too common to mention, really ;) . This year we didn't get the early December hailstorm that usually wipes out much of the crop, so the place is groaning with 'em.

Another note about Taste of Tasmania. This year, they 'proudly announced a world first' (everyone starts cringing). The thing went 'cashless' ("as a trial" - oh, sure). The CBA waved some techno magic in front of the Hobart City Council (who run the event) and convinced the gullible twits that their small biz tablet with card tap/swipe would be the ducks guts, and no cash would be exchanged. And, happily, council was able to charge stallholders 10% off the top of every transaction to help pay for the event.

Result - a bunch of stall holders dropped out, not able to cover the extra 10%; in practice, the system kept crashing on Day 1; today, Day 2 every stall holder I asked said that they were down 'considerably' due to the time to process transactions. About 5 taps to enter a single purchase; swipe card and pin, or tap, let it think, then issue a receipt. Versus hand over a note and get change. Remember these are small stallholders (its what makes the Taste special) - not bloody Myers. Smart people, those at the CBA. Spotted some country hicks who wanted a 'world first', without questioning why no-one else had done it. But they got their 10%, so it'll be here to stay, you can bet.

But that issue aside, a fantastic occasion.
