The view from my "office"

re: The view from my "office"

Was at the Hilton Colombo the other day, and this was my view.

I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why?

How strange is that! Was it the side looking toward the port or the side looking toward parliament? (at least I think it was parliament). Maybe there was credible concern for the bosses safety and snipers might have been watching you!

The label was on every window in the room (small suite), and it was on the corner of the building so many vantage points. It faced the docks I think... not sure which building was the parliament.

I just find the phrasing strange. It's almost worded like it's for the guest's security, but the message doesn't really fit that logic. Possibly a hangover from the civil war?

Just odd – I've never come across anything like it!

Not having been there, but a quick Google shows the Air Force HQ and Ministry of Defense in close proximity on one side and the Presidential Palace on the other - so commercial in confidence issues would be my bet.

Indeed! I didn't even look. Makes a bit more sense, but still – hardly a great security strategy simply asking hotel guests not to look out the window with binoculars?

Torwards the end of the Civil war, I stayed in the big hotel next to the Hilton, closer to the 'beach', as an official with a Junior Australian sporting team. (Asian Champs were being held there). We placed the boys in their rooms, and a few of them came and got us- all the rooms on one side of the Hotel had a sign on their windows, to that effect, and were obscured.
So exactly what did our boys do- opened up the windows for a good look.

Immediatly behind the Hotel, ocean side was the biggest, sandbagged, anti-aircraft gun emplacement, complete with radar dishes that spun up every hour or so.

Also all around the area were signs not to take photos facing the Parliamentary building/presidents residence(?)

The Air Force HQ was also in the area behind the Hilton. You could tell it by the machinegun nest up in the tower out the front.

Two weeks after we were safely home the Tamil Air Force actually bombed Colombo, and I understand they did fire the big gun behind the Hotel.

Moral of the story- we live in a very lucky country.

That's fascinating! Adds some context to the location. The hotel must have been right in the thick of it.

First time in JL F. What an amazing place to spend 13 or so hours, the reviews/reports were absolutely true and I can not wait to return.

re: The view from my "office"

Probably government/military buildings.

Likely. When we were up in tea country, we needed to travel over a dam over Castlereagh Reservoir and our driver was very explicit in telling us it was a military zone and we must not take photos and they would stop the car if they saw cameras.

Yet we were able to take photos of it from a distance!
