I'd forgotten just how wonderful the view from the Grampians is. I used to hike up there back in the early '80s.

Best oysters in the world? Pristine waters over there. Even I could eat the crumbed ones - I don't eat oysters.

re: The view from my "office"

Definitely a cut above Bluff oysters. They are good fried though.

re: The view from my "office"

Not a big fan of oysters, but Coffin Bay scallops are to die for!

Sorry to be a downer but the best oysters in the world come from Vancouver island and Puget sound. Unlike here, they have 56 different types of oysters! It's worth flying to Seattle and going to the Fairmont oyster bar for happy hour where they have more than a dozen different fresh unsucked oysters on ice for your choice.

Or a case of better promotion by the Canadians ;)
Mr google shows other sites first that don't mention Canada :p

re: The view from my "office"

Sorry but I have tried a lot of oysters in Washington state and there are not 56 different types of oysters-just 5.And over 90% of those sold are the Pacific oyster the predominant oyster in Coffin bay.The game they play is to say oysters from different bays are different types.
The Pacific oysters we have had in the last few days are the biggest, creamiest and best I have tasted including those in Washington state.
Also in Coffin Bay you can get Angassi oysters-a native species but IMHO not as good as the pacifics. But you wont get an Angassi on Vancouver Island.
They also here grow on some oysters for 6 years and sell them as "jumbo"oysters.None around at the moment but they are said to grow to 1kg.Now that would be an oyster.

No, I stick to my comments. There are 5 species but like wine terroir there are many different 'types' of oysters.

Not saying Coffin Bay oysters are not good but so often we get very inferior oyster served in Australia. For example it's rare to find unshucked oysters in Brisbane fish shops. They may have come from Sydney or Coffin Bay but how long ago? Many are just not fresh.

The pacific northern west pride themselves in the freshness and quality of their oysters. Raven lady at Ucklelet for example is extraordinary as are many Seattle oyster bars.

re: The view from my "office"

But I am eating these in Coffin Bay.And as for terroir you also have Cowell,Douglas Bay,Boston Bay,Streaky bay and many more places with different growing conditions all here on the Eyre Peninsula. So I stand by my Position.
And I can get unshucked Coffin Bay oysters at the oyster distributor less than 1km from my home on the Sunshine Coast as well as Sydney rock oysters and Tasmanian Pacifics.
