The Virgin Australia Newbie Questions Thread

Points & SC showed up overnight! Longer than expected but glad they're there.

I've been flying VA for years and am WP now but I don't think I've ever used Fly Ahead before.

I can be checked-in and still request Fly Ahead at the lounge if travelling HBO, right?

Yes you can - although I’ve had success maybe two out of the last ten times I’ve asked, maybe because of my golden triangle and time of day flights.

If I book flights via the VA website, and fly SQ, can I choose seats on the SQ sectors? How is this done? I see that there can be advantages as VA Gold for status points etc, although the fare seems higher booking on VA. Seat selection is an issue though because as you go through the process in VA, it says seat map not available but ofcourse via SQ web site it is!!

Why not just book on the SQ website and credit to VA? You'll still get your VA status benefits.

Where do I find my Velocity membership year? On QF its easy, but for the life of me I can't find the equivalent on VA's site. I joined like 10 years ago and have never used it. But will start doing so later this month.

Thanks!

Well that’s a stroke of luck… I joined mid December 2006. So it looks like I’ve got the right time to start accruing SCs :) TBH I prolly would have cancelled the old membership and started again if I’d been at a less than optimal point in my membership year.

If your goal is to attain a higher status level, it's always the right time to start because of the rolling 12 month counter.

Yeah…. but apparently for gifting companion gold/platinum it somehow changes from the rolling period to the membership year? At least from what I can make out in the other threads here on AFF.

I’m not sure how it all works yet… i guess it will become clear once I start earning and looking at the activity statement in my account. As mentioned earlier I’m looking at around 450SCs a month BIS.

Yeah, I guess it comes down to weighing up the costs to see what is the best option.
I think if it was clear how you could choose seats by using VA site would be an obvious advantage to book via VA (even if the cost was slightly higher). Surprised that no one seems to have a work around. If I get ten minutes I might call VA and enquire. It would.be good to book via VA for the status credits but as this is over 4 sectors I don't want to be left struggling and sitting in the worst seats down the back.

Only have done a reward booking on Virgin Website for Singapore Airlines flight SIN/CNS.
Singair Reservation Code was on the Travel Reservation.
Could select standard seats gratis.
Extra legroom they wanted $108.60 and Forward Zone Seat $34.00 each, pass.

We booked extra legroom HKT-SIN, which was around AUD35 I think… might have been slightly more. I think we might have been the only two paying pax because we got the whole row - 6 seats - to ourselves and the other row was packed. It was certainly worth it, although the analysis might be different if the flight was totally full.

Hello, very new to this forum and looking at the frequent flyer stuff :). I am working on understanding the abbreviations but not there yet. Am hoping someone might have some ideas about my query. My husband is platinum (work and leisure) & we have always pooled my points ( leisure only) to his account. Is it better to keep my own points and for us both to be gold? If I fly by myself I have to go J (?) to get lounge access etc so wondering what would be better. Some articles I have read indicate gold is the "sweet spot" as far as status goes. Cheers

Are you flying enough on your own to make Gold?
You could always keep pooling to him and he can gift you gold

Hey all, I will lose Velocity Gold status next year. Was wondering is it a soft downgrade to Silver (with the associated perks) or just nothing at all?
