Not much to see in the town so you didn't lose much
There's a way though, you go all the way along the shore line towards St.Petersburg, past the Chess Cascade and get to a fence. Jump over and you are in town. Repeat in reverse when you want to get back into the gardens. You must be in a reasonable shape to do it-:)

Not sure +1 would have wanted to jump the fence; of course I would have been up for it.:rolleyes:

I am sure you are right about not much to see in town but like most travellers, I would have liked to have found out for myself. I wasn't really upset though.

For future reference, if you do go out into the town, is there a train or other transport back to St. P, or is the hydrofoil the only worthwhile option?

PS: I have still 19 metro trips for SPB metro (we couldn't count!) and 2 for Moscow metro left, and will be happy to pass them on to any AFFer going to these 2 places!
To be sent to jojen :)

A seemingly small tip but one that saved me heaps, is the gender of the voice in the Moscow metro. Trains inbound to the city have a male voice annoucing the approaching station and outbound trains have a female voice. Saved me lots of times when I was last there!

A couple of less mainstream suggestions that I visited were the Cosmonaut Museum Музей коÑмонавтики and the Central Air Force Museum. I like planes :) It is easy to get to the Cosmonaut Museum via the metro and a short walk. The CAFM was an awesome adventure via metro, local train and a decent walk. I probably should do a trip report now I think about it :)

Have only just just seen this thread since you posted. Thank you very much.

We have our Russian visas, have bought the train tickets from Moscow to St Petersburg on line from the Russian trains website, so now ready for Russia. Looking forward to it. Unfortunately no Bolshoi Ballet for us in Moscow on the dates we are there.

A huge thank you to KPC, VPS, RooFlyer, sergeyvzn, and Jacques Vert for all their advice on Moscow and St Petersburg. Your advice has certainly made planning our trip a lot easier, and also made us realise that we could visit these cities independently. We are looking forward to our visit next month.

A couple of "free" (tip based) walking tours we did in SPB and Moscow to help orientate ourselves:
Best FREE Tour of St. Petersburg! We'll show it for FREE! | St. Petersburg Free Tour - great St. Petersburg free tour and other great paid tours. NewGeneration Tour.
Moscow Free Tour - historically first and probably the best Free tour in Moscow as well as Kremlin tour, Moscow metro tour, Moscow guided tour, one of the best Moscow city tours, Moscow travel, all of Moscow day tours in Moscow Russia, even Monino ai

Must go to Catherine palace (in partic. to see Amber room), outside SPB; you can get there yourselves by local train / bus if you don't want to go on an expensive tour group but note: If you are not with a tour group, the palace is only open to individuals during limited hours: 12:00 to 2:00pm and 4:00pm to 5:00pm.;
