Woo hoo - Another 2 wickets have fallen in the session - so Younis is out and Shah (nice catch by Bird). 5/122

Definitely a good crowd in, helped by the gold coin donation.
Brewongle and Churchill were pretty full by 12, so they opened the lower deck of the Trumper as well

Members (Members/Ladies/Noble/Bradman) also has decent attendance

Lyon certainly bowling better & finally pitching a bit wider. I am thinking the new ball might finish things quickly

Now I been folding the washing and have just watched the Aussies take the last 3 wicket. All over

Only took 2 balls. Bird takes his 4th catch - a record for a substitute fielder.

Sarfraz 72 n.o. will help his averages.

I was at the game too and everyone was absolutely taking the mockers out of him at mid off/fine leg. Loved how Lyon was throwing the ball to him, then a few balls later he'd swing his arm without releasing the ball. Lots of booing ensued :P

Was also my first time going to a test, so today's effort will be hard to beat!

Love how the new ball was taken and used for two deliveries, one swing and a miss and one swing and edge. So that ball has hit the pitch twice and the bat once. Could be used again.

I guess it goes in the box to be used as a possible replacement in the future?
The end came very quickly, the runout was a real bungle. Hazlewood has certainly stepped up this summer, good to see another country boy make the grade.

One has to question Smith's decision not to better utilise his bowlers. Blooding a bowler will give both the person and the team confidence with additional depth. Pace/spin and spin/spin made sense, but share it around. Give each pace bowler 3 over stints so they can go hard, then recover. Use Cartright as the filler. Again, none of the Pakistani batsmen had seen him before, so that's an advantage that wasn't utilised. 4 overs wasn't enough to see the bowler. Smith then bowls himself...

Wholeheartedly agree with the story and hope the selectors make the right decision fo the upcoming Indian tour and learn from Englands' mistakes.

Good to see Mickey Edwards make a paragraph in that story:

Instead, the taste for novelty is insatiable. As O'Keefe took three wickets, surely sealing his place for the Indian tour, his friend and clubmate Mickey Edwards turned a good day for Australia into a great one for Manly-Warringah. The threshold for cult status is not especially high – Edwards became an instant idol by virtue of fielding in a green cap that appeared to have built-in mad Scotsman's hair – but the towering youngster got a taste of hearty SCG cheers and heard a chant in his name. Someone get a comment from Toni Basil. The crowd even booed David Warner when he came back on at Edwards's expense. If Edwards gets his body right, he might one day be Australia's most beloved fast bowler since Merv Hughes.

It seemed to me that Smith only bowled himself to hasten the arrival of the new ball. Cartwright was selected out of the blue & his bowling returns certainly had not warranted a long stint at test level-to me it seemed that the Aussies wanted to win & get things over rather than conduct a trial for India. I guess this all makes the selection of Cartwright even more puzzling

All sorts of team theories here:

Interesting the talk about Handscomb as keeper. I saw him keep most of the third day and he did a pretty good job as far as I could see. Didn't get a catch though - didn't drop any either. He also fielded without keeper's pads. I think he had long shin guards on from his short leg fielding. Was surprised he didn't put on proper pads in the break though.

The thing about batting in India is patience, something Australia hasn't had in years. Hopefully Renshaw can handle the spin and hang around like he did here. Smith can play spin and Handscomb looks mobile enough in the crease to get by. Whether Warner can control himself remains to be seen. Khawaja was apparently all at sea in Sri Lanka so there's a question mark over him. Number 6? Shaun Marsh? Because he apparently can play spin? But he's a duck, duck, duck, century sort of bat.

Can we bowl them out twice is probably a bigger question. England piled up reasonable totals but then India just went past them and got big first innings leads and applied pressure. Australia has to be able to bowl them out for less than 400 to have any chance. I'd be seen as hopeful if I predicted 0-3 or 1-3.

They could really do with some red ball cricket before they go but I guess it's slather and whack for half the squad and then straight into the first Test.

Australia cricket: Squad Steve Smith must take to India

He was interviewed post match and the last keeping he had done was in the Matador Cup (some months back), so the skills were current.

Just because Shaun Marsh acquitted himself in past Indian tour. Sorry, that weighs about as much as current form against any team and Renshaw has it over him in spades. Renshaw can get a lot of experience by talking to players who have been on the past tours or who played in 20/20 matches over there. However, reality can be different to theory.

Have to agree. Whichever way it happens (whomever bats first), the Indian will apply pressure like we did to Pakistan. Some teams will crumble, some may eke out some draws.
