When I arrive at HK airport, where and how do I go collecting a 3 sim card for my tablet?
My Mrs has piped up and said "I dont want to be spending much time at the airport, I want to go straight to the hotel"

The map on the Hong Kong airport website has got me confused.

You can get 3 sims at most convenience stores around HK, or most sims for that matter. And you can get them at many of the newsstands on street corners too.

(I tried to get a sim at the airport once before... but arrived rather late and they were shut. Not sure until what time they normally stay open, but what I mean to say is that you should have little problem procuring a sim) :D

I was thinking of getting a octopus card from the 7-11 that is in arrivals hall, do they sell 3 sim cards also?
Also if you buy from a store like that, how does it activate?

I hadn't thought about the 7-11 in the arrivals hall. They probably do sell SIM cards but I can't confirm for sure. It's worth asking though. When you buy the SIM from a convenience store or newsstand, they come with a little pack with instructions on how to activate - from memory I think they give you a verification number and you call up and punch in the number and then you're good to go.

oh but you're using it on a tablet, right? I'm not sure - I've only used these sims in smartphones before.

What kind of tablet do you have? Something that takes normal sized SIMs or micro-SIMs?

Beware that not all Three prepaid sims are the same. There are many different types of prepaid Three sims available, and they're all different in terms of initial cost, call charges, data charges, etc. If you're after a specific one, I would recommend getting one from the airport Three shop, as they speak English(better than the ones in the local areas), and seem to have the biggest variety of stock I've seen. Its true that you can get Three sims at many convenience stores and at other Three shops around HK, but most convenience stores only seem to sell the stock standard Three sim, "3G Super Value Monthly Fee Rechargeable SIM Card" (three.com.hk 3G) which has higher charges(for data/call) than the one I ended up buying, the "3G Rechargeable SIM Card for iPad"(three.com.hk 3G).

Depends on your usage patterns of course, each different SIM has its pros and cons. The "3G Rechargeable SIM Card for iPad" has higher initial starting cost($198), of which $18 goes to your monthly charge, and the leftover $180 goes towards costs for SMS/Voice calls, and a monthly cap of $168 a month for data ie. you can use as much data as you want for $168. This also comes in micro-sim form, so goes straight into your iPad2, or iPhone 4(or 4s). Even though it says its for iPad, you can stick it in your iphone and use it for calls as well(afaik, its the cheapest call costs too...)

The standard "3G Super Value Monthly Fee Rechargeable SIM Card" costs $98 to buy, has no monthly cost, but has higher voice/sms costs, and a higher monthly data cap of $388. I think this comes in normal sized SIM(which you can get cut down to micro-sim if needed). So if you use a lot of data, go for the "3G Rechargeable SIM Card for iPad" as that has a much lower data cap cost.

In terms of procuring the actual SIM card, if you want the "3G Rechargeable SIM Card for iPad", I would advise getting it from the airport Three shop, its on the departures level, right around the middle(counter A on one end, H on the other, think the shop is around counters F or G), on the end closest to the departure gates. When you land, obviously, you'll be on the arrivals level, so take an escalator to the departures level and go from there. I was trying to get another one for my gf while in HK and had trouble getting it from other Three shops in HK, let alone convenience stores like 7-11. From what was explained to me, most locals don't use prepaid sim cards, so they don't usually stock that specific product at the Three shops around HK. In fact, they didn't even know about it, until I pointed it out on their website. If you're happy with the stock standard Three sim card, should be able to buy at 7-11, etc...

Hope that helps.

My one is a acer iconia a501, it takes the normal sims, not micro sims.

The 7-11 store certainly sell SIM cards - the one I have used is right in the middle of the West wall of the arrivals - between halls A & B.

Hong Kong International Airport

I used to buy my "peoples' cards there for HKD98 - call back to Oz for 8¢ per minute. Now they are called 'China Mobile". Home_China Mobile Hong Kong

Other than that, the three store is on level 7.

they should, but I'm assuming they'll only have the stock standard Three sim card for sale. There are some instructions for activating it on the packet itself, all the prepaid sims have em.

If the Three shop in departures hall is open, just get it from them and get them to activate it, etc... They will put the SIM into the phone, activate it, set the service to English, make sure you can get internet access, etc.. If I recall, the APN setting had to be changed on my iphone before it could access the internet on the Three sim.

First time in Hong Kong.
Plane arrives Tuesday at 6:50pm, flying Sing Air.

I don't believe you can get a new Octopus card from 7-11 stores. You can 'add value" to an existing card and use it for purchases in the store.

Youn can get an Octopus card from the Airport Express service desks at HKIA. There is one just as you are leaving the baggage claim area and also in the main public aresa (round desk just before the ramps to the trains).

If u exit to the right of customs then (just turn to your left once in the terminal) and u find some phone and sim sellers.
Take about 10 min max and ask them to activate as well.

And yep u can get the Octopus card from the Airport Express service desks at HKIA right in front of the platform to city.

Once you get the the main city stations, plenty taxis to take u to your hotel.

Just had a look at the map. Assuming you arrive at T1, you'll be on the 5th floor. The arrivals level is on the 7th floor. I *think* there are escalators on the far sides of the floor when you arrive which can take you up there. It can't be that hard since I remember getting one from the shop after I landed there from Bangkok once. I can confirm in about a days time if you want since I'm scheduled to arrive there in less than 24h from Melb, and I don't mind wandering around to have a looksee, I don't have much baggage. The Three shop(according to the map) is only open from 0700 to 2300.

Ah! just saw this post, not sure if you'll see my update by then, as you might be in the air by the time I post my update.

Ya, I used to have a "peoples" prepaid SIM that I bought from 7-eleven before I switched to Three. They're nice and cheap, and come in normal sim size, however, they're not 3G, so for data, they're a bit slow as they use 2G(Edge).

Depends on the situation when you arrive, (and my info is ~4 years old, may be no longer valid), but the desk before the train ramps had a veerrrry long queue when we were there, and we were able to purchase one down at a desk by the train platform (along the ramp, turn left)...much shorter queue at the time.

3 SIMs and Micro SIMs (same thing really, the one card has "press out" things for both) should be available at the 7/11 in the arrivals hall, assuming they haven't run out of stock. Am not sure if they also sell Octopus cards, but even if they don't .. there's a MTR customer service booth that will happily sell you one before you get on the train.

Just arrived and can confirm that as you come out after customs, if you turn either right or left and walk to end, there are escalators and elevators which will take you to the departures level on 7. Then, its a short walk to the Three shop next to counter G.

Easy as pie!
