I just want to praise Travel Insurance Direct for their handling of a claim for my family. I normally only take out travel insurance for domestic holidays to get the benefit of rental car excess coverage. This is typically a cheaper way than doing it through the car rental company. At Christmas, my family visited a family member who was unwell and a prognosis that his condition would deteriorate. While we were visiting he died suddenly, unexpectedly of a completely different condition (stroke). Already being in the town of his death, I didn't know if the policy would cover our costs. My first call to TID revealed they would most likely cover the cost of changing our flights home but could only confirm this after submission of the claim form. Thinking nothing ventured nothing gained, I also submitted a claim for all reasonable additional costs e.g. extra car rental, accommodation, meals. TID paid out for all of it and about 50% more. Their letter doesn't explain what they have based their payout on but I am not complaining. After the stated time for processing the claim I hadn't had a response. I rang and was told, without my knowledge, the claim had initially been declined but in their internal audit process had found this to be the incorrect action. They then expedited the processing. On my initial contact I was also impressed with their staff member's efficiency, understanding and compassion.

Top marks, TID.

Thanks for the report GladstoneTim. I always purchase my policies through TID and haven't had to make a claim yet but good to hear your experience with that.

Made 2 claims with TID this year (one japan earthquake rerouting, one lost camera). Both paid quickly and efficiently, and always a pleasure to deal with. Recommended.

Thanks for the feedback, TID now heads towards the top of list in my search for a replacement for the now useless Amex Platinum card insurance.

Well done TID.

Sorry to hear about the family member Tim.

Sorry for your loss Gladstone Tim.

And thank you for reporting the insurance outcome...I hope never to have to claim on TI, but have been using TID for a couple of years now...reassuring to know they seem decent to deal with.

It quotes $300 pa for a family worldwide policy with the TIDTHANKS discount code. Looks to be a winner for me so far.

Likewise.. won't be my first annual policy with them either...

Never had to make a claim (and really don't ever want to need to!!!) but it is comforting to hear that they seem to handle claims well.

Sorry for your loss.

I've claimed against TID and will continue to renew.

I need to renew my annual policy and it comes up at $390....with the discount it is $358.80. Is that the standard cost now ?

The Annual policy nowadays has a big difference in cost between 1 and 2 person; a 1 person policy used to cover your partner when they travelled with you - no more.

I got a policy for my daughter to travel last weekend, it does seem like their prices have gone up over even a month ago when I last looked!
