Time shifting Alan Joyce does it again - I leave Sydney before I arrive there

Well this was less painful than I anticipated! First attempt I got the Philippines call centre and the lady couldn't fix it because there was no X space on the Sunday. She was trying to call her supervisor and had me on hold and was checking in every few minutes, then disconnected me after 6-7 rounds. So I called back and got Cape Town. The lady changed the BNE-LAX flight to Sunday as I requested, left the AA flight to PVR as is and said a new e-ticket will be emailed in 24-48 hours. She seemed to have more authority than the first lady in the Philippines and was more confident. I am actually happy as I would rather have a night in LAX to get some sleep before heading to PVR.

As others have pointed out, itineraries rebooked due to a schedule change result in time travelling is something that is not uniquely QF. And I honestly don't think the real anger has anything to do with this. The real fury is the prospect of having to sit on the phone for 6 to 12 hours to get connected to an agent who has received less than the minimum required training for Qantas who ends up cancelling your award itinerary you spent so long searching for.

Uncle Alan has told us that time and time again that we rusty travellers should simply use the wonderful self-service rebooking tools QF have made available to us which would solve all of our problems in minutes to our satisfaction. Well, as someone who has now been on the receiving end of several schedule changes from QF, I can assure you those tools don't really work. Case in point, I received an email earlier today from QF indicating my flight from SYD to MEL has been cancelled and I was put on a later flight. When I click the change option to see what other options are available, this is what I was greeted with:

I'm a QF Gold travelling in J from AKL to MEL and that was the only option available on Sunday Jan 15. Incredible! Simply incredible!

I have an upcoming flight in May 2023.

BNE LAX 1020 0650 QF (Monday)
LAX PVR 1120 1623 AA (Monday)

So the BNE LAX one was changed to 2215 1845 (Monday) arriving after my flight to PVR departs.
Is this something I can change online without penalty? It's a classic Y award ticket but availability in Y award is not available on either same day or day before. Not sure if I can change this myself and I am afraid to mess with it.

I would prefer to do the BNE LAX on a Sunday and stay overnight in LAX rather than push the PVR flight to Tuesday.
Can this be done online or do I have to make the dreaded phone call?
If there's no award availability, you wont be able to change it yourself online.
With a call you should hopefully be able to have them accommodate you (especially as its 'only' in Y), on the earlier flight. Should be no points charge for this, currently waived, and an involuntary change regardless.
They might say (who knows with call centre lotto these days) that since the change is to within 24hrs of the original flight, you have to just wear it, point out you are now arriving after you need to depart LAX, and that is quite tricky.

Sorry @kangarooflyer88 - that looks OK. Normally you'd be routed via Perth on the previous weekend. Or is it's case of ';)' ?
Seems to be pretty reckless of QF to reroute passengers via Perth back in December 2021 for travel next week given the hard border they had.

I worked up the courage to click on the "change booking" button and this is what I get - a permanent error message - no matter how many times I log in and try...

Looks like the system is designed to force you to either cancel the booking or ring the call centre :(
