To knowingly commit a cardinal redemption sin

I'd call it impossible on QF unless you have status.

Good on you for getting value from your points.

I am QF Gold and I cannot see any J seats, not even 1. Another thing is that I booked on next year's school holidays which also combines with Easter plus Anzac Day so I booked the 4 Y seats as soon as it was available.

Coming back I booked on VA points on HA (no J either) on last day of school holiday as QF's tax surcharges from USA were horrendous. VAs taxes is like heaven compare with QF. So whilst I booked in Y, I think I have maximised the points value based on availability.

I would have sold those points for $400 and bought the headphone at harvey norman with $150 leftover.

I thought of the same thing but with a minor difference. I'd have sold the points for $500 and bought a second set of Bose for RoMambai jnr.

there is only one cardinal sin with QF points - which is using them for anything but an F redemption with EK. Any other use of points is sinful, to the extreme.

+1. It's unlikely I'd pay for F so only way I get to travel in style is by redeeming points for premium cabins. Happy to stay in mid range hotels and pay cash and save points for the next F/J flight. Have a Europe trip coming up and flying EK J on the way over and EK F coming home. Saving and accumulating more points for return Europe trip in 2020.

Good Morning All,

I am QF WP and have 1.5m QF points thinking of taking Mrs PJF on RTW J using points next year. Is that the best deal and use of points seen it is 280,000 points. Good friend (TA) says I need at least 12 months in advance to arrange. Any comments or thoughts from the establishment on the use of points and also using points for other benefits..

With 1.5m QFF points you may as well do the trip in F :)

Good point but was worried that some carriers may not have F and then get downgraded to J which I suppose is still not bad.

I guess it depends on where you wish to go. F is probably more available than you may think. Worth doing a dummy booking.

As we all know on AFF, the most value is gained from your loyalty points for redeeming them in premium classes. And what I've learnt from my short time in the 'points game' starts to become hardwired into your brain.

Some scoff at people using points for gift cards, holiday packages or hotels - I've become a little that way and thinking, why would you do that! But after speaking to my wife recently about starting to plan a trip to the US next year, I've started to think a little different about point redemption's and it definitely is not a 'one way fits all'.

After deciding on possible routes and classes for our planned trip, we knew that we would still have a healthy QFF balance after woods. My wife suggested we just use the remaining point balance towards booking some hotels, I scoffed, why would we do that as it provides such a bad return. She said, well that might be the case but when do you plan on using the remaining points on a premium flight? I had no answer as we generally only travel internationally every few years and I don't see that changing anytime soon at our current stage in life.

After giving it some more thought, by the next time we were probably going to travel we'd more then likely have enough points again to travel in a premium class (based on current accrual rate). So to save points for a premium rainy day, or save some money and use them at a sub-standard rate?

We'll be using the leftover points committing a cardinal redemption sin, but surely I'm not the only one am I??!!?

I too am torn between using points for hotel or saving for premium flight, but like rock 86 my wife is planning for an OS (Hawaii) trip early next year & have decided to redeem points on hotel.

Just booked SYD - BNE in J with points. Because why not.

Figured I have plenty for the type of travel I do, and it was a measly amount. At the very least I get lounge access :D ... small things make me happy.

Keep an eye out on HA J.. I today just scored MEL-AKL-HNL return for school holidays April 2019 in J. Booked with QF MEL-AKL, VF AKL-HNL-KOA , then AA HNL-AKL-MEL on way home. Use the AA website to search HA availability.

Not the most direct as via Sydney or Brisbane, but a lot less flying than via mainland usa or Japan. China eastern via QF is another option via PVG, but still a long way and lot of flying.

Booking Y with points is still better than paying school holiday fares.
