I am def keen on this deal, but it seems JAL website is broke, and is only showing full rate and no Y+.
Friendly lady on the phone tells me they are looking into it and it might be all good tomorrow..
Did intend on having a stroll around the area, a nice little jaunt in Japan would be good.

Ummm... because First class is a lifestyle concept rather than about value for money
I'm not sure whether you're having a go at me or NYCguy or just commenting? Either way is ok.

Anyway, given I pay a lot of tax as it is, I find my trips in F pay for themself.

Be patient if you can. Japan is a wonderful country and worthy of a stopover if feasible.

Yes, as I mentioned yesterday the fare is loaded, but doesnt seem to be quoting at all. FYI From the 21st of September, the fare goes down. Before this, the fare is higher.

I have flown Y to Japan with JAL on two previous occasions and until I read this thread had not even considered them for our flights to France later this year!

Thanks to input by FF members I have booked JAL PE from CBR-SYD-NRT-CDG for $2885 pp. (Of course only Y CBR-SYD)
As the website only allows bookings from SYD/BNE I phoned JAL and they quoted a price plus $60 handling fee so I did a fair bit of research before booking through a travel agent and got a price I was happy with.

Of course the fare includes hotel (Nikko) at NRT, but meals are only included for those flying J or F, and lounge access plus 320 QFF status credits :D:D:D

No - not having a go at anyone :)

Just making the comment that First class would rarely stack up, if ever, on the 'is it worth the money?' question.

Clearly with so many business classes out there with full flat beds then First class is of little actual benefit these days - not like you're buying the aforementioned flat bed. And it doesn't get you to your destination any quicker (except maybe for customs!)

First class is more a 'lifestyle concept' for want of a better word. Either you embrace it and think it is worth it for the concept of it, or you don't (and are happy with biz or economy and save the money to spend elsewhere).

I have been struggling to find a decent price (or indeed any price) on a one way flight SYD - LHR in September 2010 to accommodate an award flight the other direction.
Our TA just booked JL Y+, 1850 plus taxes. 2 daytime flights, QF points / status credits and if it is true that lounge access is included its a great deal.
My only concern was that earlier in the year there speculation about the future of JL and possible bankruptcy - is the outlook more positive now?

RE the OP's initial question, we're all different. I know many people who hunker down in Y, wake up at the other end of a long haul flight, stretch and go about their business. I'm not one of them, so wont fly Y on anything longer than 8 hours or so because I'm wrecked and tired if I do. Y+ is worth the extra for me, but not for others.
Also because I'm QF WP, the value of the status credits and the increased chance of award upgrades is factored into my value calculation.
