hi there, we need a hotel in Tokyo for 1 night. Preferably near the main train station ... we land at Narita about 6pm and then we take a Shinkansen to Iiyama the following morning about 10am or 12noon.

any recommendations will be appreciated.

oh, sorry. budget - we don't want to stay in a back packers or anything cheap and nasty. at the same time, we don't need to 5 star Sheraton type hotel either ... mid range I guess.

I'm driven more by the location to the train station really, so we can get along easily the following morning for the train to the snow. We will have our gear with us.

cheers

Do you have a JR Pass or just buying a train ticket? With a JR Pass it can take some time to arrange your first journey.

we don't need a JR Pass. we are just going straight to Nozawaonsen the next morning. will just buy a ticket on the Shinkansen either before we leave AUS or when we hit the train station. So it's a only a return journey on the train to Iiyama ...

I'd stay nearby Tokyo or Ueno Station.

Ameyoko Market in Ueno is pretty good for a cheap feed.

Keisei line trains from Narita, stop at Nippori and Ueno.
Access Narita bus is 1000 JPY to Tokyo Station. Or you can take the JR Nex (Narita Express).

I've stayed at a few AirBNBs near Ueno, so I can't recommend any hotels in particular. I suspect near Ueno will be a lot cheaper than near Tokyo Station.

Near Omiya Station is another suitable option...

Or if you want it to be really easy, Tokyo Station Hotel (but not classic room if you don’t like small rooms). We usually crash there as it’s right at the station. The other place I’ve stayed around there was through the Yaesu exit - MitsuiGarden Hotel, close to the exit. Not 5 star but quite big rooms. There is a Shinkansen gate at the Yaesu side as well so easy to get to.

Nozawaonsen

One of my favorite places on earth. I love Noz, such a beautiful village, amazing food and of course the tree skiing. Love it!

If at Ueno consider checking out the zoo if you have time.

yeah we stayed in Ueno last year when we went up. you're right, it would be very handy and the Keisei train goes there ... I'll see if Mrs BJ wants to do that again.

we were thinking of staying in Shinjuku so we could get to Golden Gai and some Takoyaki for the one night that we are in town ... We caught a taxi to Shinjuku from Ueno from memory and that was very nice and reliable.

I'll look at the Yaesu side of the main station though ... sounds good if there is a Shinkansen gate there.

how good is Nozawa :) have you seen the amount of snow they've had in the last month? they had to dig out underneath one of the chair lifts because it was bottoming out ... lol.

I stayed in Ueno a couple of times, and there is a hotel called Hotel Sardonyx which is fairly close to the train station and reasonably priced.
