TomCat's new digs!

Having done two major renovations I have quickly learnt to articulate my expectations early and often. Plus a follow up email just to confirm. What I want is often totally different to what the tradies think I want.

100% agree! And that has been common on this build. Tradies aren’t designers! We caught a lot of things just in time, but this one never actually thought of it and it couldn’t be tested till it was complete!

They also don’t like new things! It’s going back awhile to our first house we built in 1985. We had bought a mixer tap for the kitchen and our plumber did everything he could to talk us out of it as it couldn’t possibly be any good. He really amused me some months later by proudly telling me he had bought one for his wife and she hadn’t wanted it, but he told her it was really good.

We found that the builder isn’t that creative when trying to solve an issue, but try presenting different solutions and they made it work. We’d wanted most of a wall to be removed but as it turned out as they commenced removing some of the ceiling that this would not be a good idea. So they suggested merely repairing the doorway. We were in Paris at the time and started thinking of other ways to get the effect we wanted (opening up the kitchen) and started thinking about a large cut out so a servery kind of thing which would preserve top and bottom bricks. Eventually we moved on to a cut out that went to the floor but left a lot of the upper bricks (we have reeeeallly high ceilings). So an enlarged door. Drew up a plan, sent it off and the builder just went with that. But couldn’t think of that himself.

This is so true. And really is why architects/draftsman exist. Builders/trades are generally there to implement well through through plans. This is rarely actually the case. Asking the builder/tradesperson to design it for you is generally not the best idea (though there are obviously exceptions to the rule)

Productive day in the TomCat household.
Took all the cardboard to the local recycling facility, so now we can see the garage and front lounge.
Toilet roll holders installed. Hung up my uni degrees.
Got a plumber in the estate to hook up our dishwasher and connect the washing machine to the waste outlet.
Made salted caramel popcorn for Christmas.

You hung your uni degrees from the toilet roll holders?

What is it about toilet roll holders? I thought they would be an automatic fixture done before handover. I'm still annoyed at the previous owners for taking the toilet roll holders with them when they moved out( removing them from where they were fixed on the walls ).

I want to know when did 4ft high basins become a thing (3 recent hotel stays) I'm almost 6ft with a back issue, don't make me stoop! Raised bench tops and basins are a must for me. Co worker did this but builder didn't amend the pipes to allow for correct water and gas flow so added it to the list of things to put in writing

Now you see that height would suit me down to the ground! :)

Our toilet roll holders are the new vacuum style that do not require fixing. So theoretically they could be taken. I cannot imagine a build without them being installed though.
