TomTom mobile App or hard product ??

I guess the price is reasonable. I have also seen GPS units available at that price in the UK.

Tomtom want $69.95 for this map as a download. I have never downloaded except to the device memory (which may not be big enough to fit the map) so a £20 GPS with perhaps a swing past a convenient rubbish bin on departure would certainly be preferable to $69.95 plus the fun of sourcing an SD card as small as 1GB these days.

Navmii is a free and very good nav system that has maps for all over the world and works offline as well. The maps are open source and it's fantastic.

Thanks. I'll try it. It mentions 'in app' purchases so we'll see how much they are.

We tend to use iPhone apps of TomTom or as others have said Sygic is also a very good option. Sygic has HUD, Dashcam, Photo Navigation and such (sometimes free, sometimes addons) and a worldwide map version (available at sale prices sometimes).

While stand-alone SatNavs have some better features such as ability to add planning and routes before the trip, TomTom completely lost me for their devices when they wanted to charge me $149 for a new world map one month after I had purchased one of their XL machines some years ago. Plus you have to take and keep secure another physical device, power supply and mount. Phone mounts plus cigar lighter or direct USB connection to car these days are $5 from Australia Post and elsewhere. It's a pain to have to remove the SatNav device from the car when you park it while one always takes the phone.

While stand-alones now seem to have more sane map upgrade policies, iPhone apps (currently) have free lifetime map upgrades. For TomTom, we use the traditional iPhone app not the new one - which seems to me like an attempt to rip off users with yearly fees, and it just doesn't work (for me) as well as the main app or Sygic.

I used it Italy, France and the U.K. and never bought any in app purchases. Also have used extensively in AU/NZ and again never bought anything. It's good.

You are referring to the new TomTom app or Sygic?

TomTom recently updated the apps to TomTom Go Mobile. They have given 3 years
free subscription to users who had previously paid for apps. Not sure what the cost
is for a new subscription. With this app you download what countries you require.

Looks like the TomTom Go App is $30.99 for 1 year, $69.99 for 3 years.
Maybe worthwhile if you need to use an app on different continents.

Thanks for the tip on Here Maps - have downloaded the app and some maps.

I also have the Navmii app, but the annoying thing about it is that the only location services options the app has on iOS are either always or never - I like the option of only while using the app, which Here Maps has. Call me paranoid, but I don't like apps tracking my location all the time.

I have downloaded Navmii and used it twice in MEL - twice it failed to get me to correct address - I will delete when I can - as always YMMV
