A very clever piece of advertising by Virgin Blue. They don't need to be a sponsor in order to purchase advertising time and given its currently one of the biggest rating shows (ok, may not lead the ratings against State of Origin tonight) it must be an attractive investment for Virgin Blue for their advertising budget.

Not really. The ultimate in advertising is in this level of program integration - clearly you get many many more eyeballs and more importantly attention. QF wins hands down in this battle.

Neither DJ or QF are true top level sponsors because they haven't got exclusivity. Coles, for example is. However QF group media and sponsorship $ would be many many times DJ which would give them huuuuge leverage to negotiate this kind of deal.

I work in the industry :)

On the meals - one team looks gross, I'd take the real Neil Perry I got on the A380 last week :)

Qantas were contra deals, no money changed hands according to the previous link, they were smart enough to deal with Freemantle, by comparison DJ dealt with Channel 10, I suspect DJ probably paid more, not that it really matters, after all we see DJ every night, not Coles or QF on the show.

The end result was prettttttyy average imo. If I had any of those dishes on-board I would be prettttttty upset.... for eg. one prawn for an entreeeeeeee? when one is paying $10K for a seat, I expect more than 1 prawn even if it's an entree!

Qantas dealt with 10 as well don't you worry. They worked it thru the network to get their stamp on the production company. I know the buyers who do the deals :)

My point is many many more people will see the in program integration than the standard advertising.

The interaction is far far more valuable.

Look at that, 14 people on an airside area and not an ASIC in sight

As always sounds better than it is-but doesn't that apply to all airline food.

I noticed that too, they could of had AVID cards but then agin they are supposed to be displayed on "ones person" just like an ASIC. correct me if I'm wrong:D

Josh:p

Broccoli has been used for airline meals before (in both premium and Economy classes). It can turn out to be a mess, but on the other hand it can be done so there is no problem.
What some people might comment about w.r.t. airline food, particularly with foods like broccoli and spicy foods, is...well (let's not hold back any punches here)...flatulence risk.

It was roasted broccolini (not broccoli, I guess broccolini is a bit mushier) and that alone was so disgusting in consistency, that contestant came last in the challenge. One judge said it was the worst item in 3 years on the show!
I think the flatuelence risk (altho it did come up with another contestant's cauliflower) was not as much a worry as how sludgy it was. ;)

Plenty of special events have been held in that hanger in the past and everyone doesn't wear an ASIC. Sporting team departures/arrivals, the A380 launch functions, the Pope...

True, my post was somewhat tongue in cheek hence the LOL, I used to drive around there in my Cortina, times have changed! There used to be a CBA ATM airside for QF workers, somehow I always needed to make a visit when the Concorde was in :).

Must admit thats the first time I have seen Mr Joyce for any great length of time talk, very different to Mr Dixon, and while I have been a fan of Neil Perry in his series and lately with Poh, I found his performance somewhat underwhelming. Chlorinated herbs anyone?

What's with the looooooooooong words? Are you slurring? ;) :p

If you were paying $10k for a seat, you're not going to get even $1k worth of food and drink up there into your gullet. But you can always ask for seconds, thirds etc. :)

Just finished catching up with some TV viewing. There was a big discussion on MAsterchef on the Gruen Transfer this week including the Qantas Virgin advertising thing for this episode.

Available in iview for those interested, series 3 episode 3 - 30 June 2010.
