Hi all,

Unless you use an HK CC and agree to auto-topup, is there any way to use a credit card (pref. Amex but MC is ok) to add value to an Octopus card in HK? ... So far, I've only been able to find a way to add value using cash... not only would it let me earn points on my MTR fares, I could then essentially fund purchases at cash+Octopus merchants with a credit card! :)

Had a poke around for this before and the answer seemed to be no unfortunately - only selected linked-HK cards have this ability.

A pain really coupled with the fact that I couldn't buy things on my 28Degrees MC in 7-Eleven/Circle Ks (namely cheap beers at 1am).

I've tried a few times but haven't been able to do it. Resorted to cash.

The convenience of this card is amazing. Makes MYKI in Melbourne look like a complete joke.

Thanks for the replies everyone - shame it won't use my foreign CC, but I've only needed to put through about $150HKD on the card so far anyway (and only here till Friday), so no massive loss! :)

... and I have to agree - Myki is a massive waste of government money... I don't know why they didn't partner with the Qld government and get a joint smart card that could be used in either state - as Qld's system now works really well now (... the only joke here is the pricing and lack of weekly tickets etc - the system however works quite well haha)! :)
