Having been to most of the major cities in the US I can recommend Boston and Washington DC as cities that can be easily explore entirely by foot. Some of the other cities require a combination of walking and public transport to explore all the interesting areas (San Francisco, New York, Chicago). Cities not listed that lend themselves to being explored on foot include San Diego, Cleveland, and St Louis.

Having just got back from a fifth stay in NOLA I would just stress that there are quite a few areas where you shouldn't be walking at all.

Having visited NOLA many times, I'd vehemently disagree with that statement. There are no more areas that you might avoid than is any different to other large cities (eg NY or Philly). Your statement suggests that NOLA is worse than any other city for crime. This just isn't true.

There are of course numerous areas where it's perfectly safe to walk, or else I wouldn't keep going back.

I have enjoyed walking around Seattle and New York. A few more on the list I need to get to.

I'd add Portland Oregon and (while admittedly not the US) Vancouver. I averaged 23km a day walking there earlier this year, with some decent hills to get the heart rate up.

Having been to NOLA around 18 months ago, I'd have to agree. How bizarre to suggest that it's more dangerous than other US cities.

Yes, it was filmed in Savannah. The actual bench had to me moved from where it was filmed due to the attention it attracted.

I drove right past the city and didn't bother to stop a few years ago, and its bothered me ever

On what basis? The wallet? I've walked a lot of NYC and haven't felt too worried, but sure something can happen anywhere. Would you please provide an example of the danger? There has been a couple of times I've felt threatened in the states, both similar situations: Cleveland on a sunny Saturday morning - an obviously upset person very loudly swaying and yelling loud profanties. Tulsa on a Monday early evening: almost the same, except the chap was coming toward me. When it's just you and that person on very quiet streets (which the CBDs of those two places are), well...

But NYC? I've walked a lot of it. On my last trip I wanted to walk the length of Central Park and did so. Looks like a long way, but it's easily do-able. Up in the Bronx I probably felt a little less settled, but geeze my suburb in Sydney has it's moments too.
