No your right it's probably overblown due to the fact of it being not home ( the dangerousness ) so will take it back. However the amount of people on the streets begging was high. Saying that on Saturday in I was approached about 3 times in Melbourne CBD I mean accosted by strangers asking for money. I cannot remember when last not bugged like this!! It's almost impossible sitting outside anymore to have a coffee in peace.

I'm totally with you. I remember how shocked I was after my first few trips to the states: vagrants in parks in Seattle, Golden Grove park in San Fran, rattling paper cups at pedestrian crossings. In fact in San Fran (which I love, who doesn't) I recall buying a BART train ticket and turning around to the immediate question "sir, may I have your change". That's tough, to think beggars hang around ticket machines waiting for their chance. It's also why I beleive here in Australia we need to look after our socially and financially marginalised. I'm more than happy for my tax to support social welfare.

Having visited NOLA many times, I'd vehemently disagree with that statement. There are no more areas that you might avoid than is any different to other large cities (eg NY or Philly). Your statement suggests that NOLA is worse than any other city for crime. This just isn't true.

I think this needs some numbers, I do love NOLA but it is more violent than NYC. The violent crime statistics puts NOLA third after St-Louis and Detroit. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_crime_rate_(2014)

I will be casually travelling from LA to Vancouver in November, for any period between 2-6 days or so. No real hurry to get to VC

Thought I might catch the train and/or bus and take in a few stops. Any tips for places to see along the way? I like the idea of finding obscure but interesting spots, rather than go where everyone goes (already done that in USA)

I very much enjoyed walkiing tours around NY, so interested in much the the same.
I have already noted Portland and Seattle as suggestions, as well the obvious like Yosemite and Yellowstone. and the ocean train ride LA-SF.

Only time I've ever felt unsafe in the US was one evening walking through SF Chinatown looking for a place to eat. We were outside a restaurant looking at the menu when some short fat guy with a samurai sword walked up and started screaming at us to "get out of my f-ing hood".
