Hubby to Attend the Fearless Flyers Course in Sydney 1[SUP]st[/SUP] September.
http://www.australianfrequentflyer....ssion/my-freakin-flyer-hubby-can-40636-2.html

The obvious problem was HOW to get to Sydney !

Situated in the Far North it’s a bit of a long drive to Sydney so we decided after some advise and the help of a bit or a lot of Xanax it may be enough to help get him there.

Hoped to fly on the 30[SUP]th[/SUP] August, a week prior we decided a ‘trial run’ to the Cairns airport was necessary, a 240 km round trip. 2 nights before hubby took Xanax each night as the anxiety was already building, then on the morning and probably some more.

He arrived at the airport and sat in the waiting area practicing some breathing tips he was given then he thought it would be a great idea if he could walk onto an aircraft!! What was the worst that could happen – a big fat NO !

First lady said no, so he found “ Jeff” a Qantas Supervisor and explained his plight and that he was booked in for the Fearless Flyer course.
Jeff was astounded that he had done this ‘trial run trip’ and was sympathetic to his problem & was happy to go about organising for John (a bushy banana farmer under the influence of Xanax ) to go and sit on an aircraft. I was surprised I have to say !!

He met the Manager, had a bit of a chat about the anxiety problem then proceeded to escort him on to a Qantas aircraft. Jeff’s advise on which aircraft and which seat was given and left him to sit for 10 mins (the aircraft just disembarked and the cleaners were working already). The Pilot had a chat to him also and they both thanked him for making the effort so they would do whatever it took to help him. They sat down to a coffee after and a chat and John left feeling confident that he would be able to board the plane.

Jeff advised he was on a day off for his scheduled flight to Sydney but offered to come in and sit with him and escort him on to the plane, to which John said no it was your day off.

Thursday morning came with the same plan of pill popping 2 nights prior and on the morning. I could tell he was still a bit stressed ! Driving to Cairns John got a call from Jeff the Qantas Supervisor to tell him he has come into the airport and was going to meet with him and escort him to the plane (John responding with a no its your day off). The recommended seat in economy wasn’t open to no status so I used points and booked him in J. Jeff met with him, walked with him, put him on the plane last, the Captain introduced himself, the Cabin Manager promised to look after him. I received a call from Jeff to advise me that he had left and they were in the air.... ! He made it , phew !! $950 for the course not wasted..

We cannot believe how much assistance Qantas staff went to, to enable him to get on this aircraft ! I think he felt like Qantas Royalty with the treatment he received. I rang Sir John on arrival, all ok but very tired. A very big THANK YOU to JEFF at Qantas and feel that the service and attention was simply unbelievable.

Now the course begins..........!!!

Well that is just fantastic. I hope the course is as successful as the trip from Cairns. And kudos to the Qantas staff for their help.

My sister-in-law has flying anxiety and will only come to the Sunshine Coast by train or bus so I know how you feel.

Congratulations for that first big step. :D

You should probably put that in a nice letter to Sir AJ as all feedback, bad, good and in this case EXCELLENT should make its way up the food chain!

Best of luck to you both. I look forward to hearing of a successful outcome

Great stuff, and I think Jeff at Cairns is a good example of why people might choose to fly with QF.

I hope it all works out for Mr Imere12.

I have sent a PM to Red Roo:)
Fill in the feedback form. These guys can be nominated for the eXcel awards QF do for outstanding staff. They're recognisable on-board if they're winners as they have a little lapel pin. Every staff member i've seen with one of these pins has been outstanding without fail!

And great to see he's on his way. Hopefully he'll be begging to make it to WP before you know it ;)

Well Imere12 once we get him flying you will probably need to work harder on making points for two.
We have been able to get our window cleaner onto his first flight this year and I have two others who need some attention.
This fear is not uncommon even though going in a car is so much riskier.

Brilliant performances all round!
Well done, everybody, for achievements to date.
Keep us posted. It's an inspiration to all of us who have family members or friends similarly afflicted. :p

What a great story. Really emphasises the value of your people to your company.

Send a nicely prepared letter to Alan Joyce's office and also submit it through the online feedback form.

Good luck to him, and thankyou for the updates :)

Wow, such dedication on both sides: yours and QF's. Very iimpressive indeed that the QF supervisor used his own day off to help someone in distress. I look forward to reading the results of the course. Anxiety is an appalling condition; people, rightly, make much of depression but anxiety is as crippling in relation to specific issues. I hope therefore that the course is successful. I'll be sure to never let Red Bull pass my lips!

Yes I know some who are quite anxious about Airbus planes and I am always reminded by a retired Cathay pilot who said " if it ain't Boeing we ain't going!"
Now about half our flights are on Airbus and the anxiety is gone for most of us.

WELL ..... the hubby flew home on the Monday morning after the course completed and their graduation flight held on the Sunday, SYD-MELB-SYD and a delicious feast at the Melbourne Casino:)

24 ppl were in the course, 2 dropped out on the first day and 2 more couldn't get on the grad flight. Hubby says he did feel a little anxiety but no where near as bad as he was seated up the back of the plane. He flew home SYD-CNS up the front and was good.

I've added the course details if anyone is interested. Thanks to all for their good wishes :)
