Quick question about the AKL QP, the website says it opens at 4am. Is that correct?

Immigration opens at around 4am, according to ground staff, although IME a few weeks ago it opened closer to 4:20. Lounge was open upon my arrival shortly thereafter.

But surely you had some purpose for those 50 TT trips?

I admit to having some kinship with NZ. But even so. AKL has become a bit more exciting in he last 10 years.
...
Early last decade it was mainly work related - and generally at the airport.

At best I'd arrive 1am get my head on a pillow by 2am and be showering at 6am and back at the airport 7am.

In the end I worked out it was easier to skip the hotel bit and shower in the domestic QP* - I'd get an additional hours sleep.

In the early days I'd take a day or so extra over there, hire a car and drive points north, south etc. Take ferries to various places - I still reckon Rangitoto is fascinating.

Just back from doing this. No questions asked in the land of the long white cloud. Probably helped that I used the smartgate. First question about my trip was from the quarantine guy in ADL. He was getting a bit suss, until I said I was using my free flight from Qantas. Once I said that he didn't bother with the X-ray machine an told me to walk through that door over there, the exit?

I was kinda unimpressed by the crews on QF81 and 82, even if they were very friendly. But that's another whole story.

You would have needed to say it 3-4 times though.

Most people seem to get away with these type of interrogations where as others seem to attract it where ever they go.

2 points. Kiwis are slow and I love the interrogation part. This is amateur hour here. Go to parts of Africa and Asia for the real deal. At times I thought we were filming midnight express 2!
