Hi. I booked a flight with qantas from Brisbane to Johannesburg. There is a transfer in Sydney from Domestic to International. My flight from Brisbane arrives at 9:20 and my flight to Johannesburg leaves at 10:35. It was all booked on the same ticket so check in and baggage shouldn't be a problem. I know I have to change terminals, is this enough time? I've looked at a few other answers and they all seem to say that it takes a long time to transfer and I'm worried about missing my flight. Should I see if I can get an earlier flight from Brisbane? Or will an hour and 15 be enough?

Thanks

That is roughly the minimum connection time. There is a transfer bus that you can use for free, this is opposite Gate 2 in the domestic terminal. You should just be able to make it if your flight arrives on time. However, if it was me I'd look for an earlier flight.

Re: Transfer Domestic to International Sydney

75 minutes is cutting it pretty fine...IF your domestic flight arrives on time and there are no major holdups at international, you would be able to do this, but any delays anywhere and you are in trouble! I would try and get an earlier domestic flight; 90 minutes is the shortest connection time I would be comfortable with.

Re: Transfer Domestic to International Sydney

I'm with the others, 75 minutes is pushing it fine assuming everything runs perfectly on time. I can tell you from experience there is nothing worse than sitting there biting your nails wondering if your going to make a connection or not.

Of course this will be the day which everything which can slow your transfer down will happen, and it'll add a lot of stress to your trip, even if you do make the connection.

I think it is way too tight. If you do stick with those times, i suggest getting a cab from domestic to international. The Qf bus is so slow (including wait times).

The train would be quicker and cheaper. A cab is about the last option I would consider for a terminal transfer in SYD.

I think it also depends on where you're sitting in the plane - the winter schedule for PER - SYD - LAX is a similar 75 min transfer which I've always found fine when seated at the front of the plane (but not so comfortable at the back - in more ways than one)

I do the BNE-SYD DOM - SYD INT run all the time and I would definitely book an earlier flight. It's just too stressful to be sat on a delayed plane at BNE knowing that you're probably going to miss your long haul flight out of SYD.

As others have said it is a bit on the short side unless everything flows well for you. I have known the bus to come to a total halt on the tarmac and just sit there for 10 minutes! When we flew CBR-SYD-JHB in June, we actually stayed overnight at Sydney airport, as Canberra is often fog bound in Winter and I didn't want to take a chance. (maximising time in the F Lounge was also a factor :) )

I would not recommend the train or bus if those flights dont change, while the Bus is slow, QF know where you are since your BP has been scanned so they will hold, on the other hand if they see no evidence that you are making your way across it might be a different outcome! There has been a few examples where a helper has been waiting for the bus when things are tight, no such luck with other transport means.

That time of day there is at least one bus departing every 10 minutes, often more. The mini tour takes ~10 minutes.

Consider changing to QF8 BNE-SYD. It's an "international" flight, so you would arrive at the international terminal and would then just need to clear transit security, having already cleared outbound passport control in BNE. :)

I would not recommend that either, its on time record is not great, and if it goes pear shaped, options for alternate flights may be limited at that late stage. Its a 9.10 arrival come daylight savings.

True... one could always check for the departure status out of DFW the night before and call QF to be moved if there's a delay though... Of course it doesn't help if a delay is announced after arriving in BNE :)

EDIT: Ahh I didn't think of the DST changes! There is also QF20 on a Tuesday? if the 5am departure doesn't bother you! Again this may change with DST :)

Next couple of months are when the diverts often happen due wind, and that wont be known the night before, more likely around 1AM or 2 AM when the weather forecast is updated for BNE and consequently, the fuel requirements for possible holding etc.

Wow - I'm impressed with your knowledge!! :)

On another note, I hope QF8 doesn't divert in Oct - have booked it connecting to HKG QF127 (~2.5hrs transit time)... It's an excuse to try out the re-fitted 747 haha!

I did MEL-xSYD-JNB yesterday, took me about 45 minutes between the time my MEL flight docked at SYD domestic to the time I cleared immigration and security at the international terminal, and that was with an on-time arrival and the transfer bus waiting. Immigration and security can be slow. I'm with the others, you really want an earlier flight.
