Hi all,
I am flying MEL-SYD-BKK (QF) and then onto HAN on Vietnam Airlines with a 2h25m stopover in BKK.
VN is not listed with QF for luggage interlining so I assume I will have to clear immigration, grab my suitcase, check in and go through immigration?
Has anyone had to do this before and is 2h25m sufficient time to allow for this?

If all flights are on a single booking from QF, they will interline your bags to Hanoi. You just need to redo security (not immigration), then go up stair to your gate or lounge. From aircraft exit to the new gate is about 15 min all together.

If you book your BKK-HAN ticket separately, I have no idea, but would be concerned about your time budget. In this case, i suggest that you nicely ask a QF crew member to give you a priority card to speed up your immigration process. They normally give it to J PAX and WP in Y cabin, if you are not any of them, explaining the situation, my guest is that they will help.

QF23's on time performance has been very poor this past year, so I would suggest having a plan B.

I can see the VN flights on the QF MMB system (listed with the QF PNR) so can I assume that they're on a single booking on QF?

If VN612 is in your QF Booking, it is most likely that they are on a single PNR and you will be fine.

QF23's on time performance has not been very good the past couple of years at least. Mad scamble the few times I have been on this flight.

I will have a QF23 flight next month, then RJ to London. 6h layover. Just hope that 6 h will be enough.

Just spoke with the QF ‘premium’ line. Was told that luggage cannot be checked through to HAN. Looks like I am going to have to look at a plan B...

Qantas selling flights on other carriers and won't interline? Makes no sense.

I thought I had photo but can't find it. I vaguely recall that Vietnam Airlines have a transfer desk counter at BKK airport, Transfer Desk West-1 in Concourse D. If that's the case you simply go to transfer desk to get boarding pass and they transfer luggage and you go back through transit security.

I'm back through BKK again in November and can check if you're not travelling earlier. Otherwise you can send email to BKK airport and they usually reply within 24 hours to confirm.

Thank you JohnK, I’m travelling Oct 4 but will email BKK as you suggest.

Are the reservations staff up to speed on the through checking rules? IME the authorities in such matters are the check in staff - and I have learnt on AFF that what appears in the Altea system will dictate what can be done.

Hi bertflyer: how did you get your VN 612 flight? Directly from Vietnam airline or through QF? If you make a single book with QF who is resell the VN flight to you, your bags should go to HAnoi.

I have just done this SYD-BKK-HAN 4 weeks ago. One PRN, bags to Hanoi.

Hi Longtoo, the booking was made through the corporate TA. QF shows the VN flights in MMB against the QF PNR, the booking details from the TA show a separate PNR and e-ticket number for the VN flights. So I think I’m in trouble with the connection and interlining.

Sounds like it's in one PNR so you'll be fine as it will be through-checked.

Agree on that now and just to add that QF do have an interline agreement with VN.

QF have both an interline baggage agreement for bags if on the same booking plus an IATCI agreement so you should even get your VN boarding pass BKK/HAN.

Maybe they're getting confused with separate tickets and that's being nice.

As long as the VN flight appears as oncarriage in Altea bags can be through checked to HAN. Even if the Corp TA issued a separate ticket BKK/HAN, it's still in the same booking so technically doesn't have to be a single ticket. That's one benefit of using a TA.

It would be a different story if the QF and VN flights were booked through the airlines' respective websites as you'd be SOL there.

Each airline will still have their own pnr whether or not flights are on the same ticket or separate tickets.

Don't highlight the fact you've got separate tickets at checkin, it may be better to say to the CSA "will my bags be tagged all the way to Hanoi"?

Even though it's the same TA GDS booking, it's still QF policy to through check to other airlines on in the same Amadeus booking (as opposed to all flights having to be on the same ticket) as I believe it was stated on their website somewhere that it was permitted.

You just don't want some well meaning CSA to not know that and believe both flights must be same ticket which could result in them short tagging your bag to BKK even if the VN oncarriage flight is visible.
