hi everyone, I did a search but really couldn't find it,

I know family transfers are ok, but what about girlfriend,

as I want to take her to Bali for her Birthday?
I really hope I can!!

or better still, am I able to book a ticket for her using my points???

Not officially allowed according to the rules, unless living in a de facto relationship:

'Eligible Family Member' of a Member means any person the Member can demonstrate, to the reasonable satisfaction of Qantas, as being related to that Member in any of the ways described below:

* Husband/Wife
* Parent/Step-parent
* Domestic Partner/De Facto
* Child, including foster & step-child
* Brother/Sister
* Half Brother/Sister
* Grandparent
* Grandchild
* Son/Daughter-in-law
* Brother/Sister-in-law
* Father/Mother-in-law
* Uncle/Aunt
* Nephew/Niece
* First cousin

and (for booking tickets on their behalf):

12.3 Members may assign Awards that they obtain through Qantas Frequent Flyer to their Eligible Family Member subject to any terms and conditions applicable to the Award. However, there may be tax implications on such a transfer.

thanks Mal,

I guess I should have looked in the T&C more carefully,

bummer, unfortunately, not in a defacto relationship

so I guess giving points or giving them a flight is not possible...

how do they test for defacto, and are there ways around it???

sorry, Im just keen to give her a nice gift, we have been together for 1.5 years, so its not a casual one...... :(

I've given rewards to friends before, just put them down as DeFacto.

I am unsure if there is an "audit" as such, and what that process would involve. It would be reasonably difficult for an airline to reject an award and prove that your not in a defacto partnership.

Except that the requirement would be for you to prove that you are in a relationship

I understand the proving/disproving aspect, but does everybody do it???

is it risky or not? as I really do want to give the gift, defacto is not like a marriage where you get a certificate, but I guess it would be a grey area....

QF have got bigger things to worry about than chasing up proof of defacto relationship for every person who redeems 50K pts for someone who they claim to be in a defacto relationship with. Sure if disputed its up to you to prove you were in such a relationship. Whatever. But before they'd go after you you'd have to give them reason to believe your not. They not going to spend $$$ on lawyers, and risk TT story in this - or even worse a publicity stunt by the bearded one.

I am sure there are lots of people out there who redeem for "first cousins" etc, that are just merely friends.

I would however suggest you don't change "defactos" every week - that might be pushing it!

Risk is probably low but the impact could be high ; having LT Gold now there is no way I would do it

fair enough, thanks everyone,

I assume that LT GOLD is a status credit thing,

I don't intend to do many defactos, real or made up anyway, and I will only give points to my family and gf,

so I think I might give it a shot!!!

I have travelled to the UK on two occasions as brother in law of my mate who use to accumulate huge amounts of points in his business. No one even blinks an eye. Just put down her address as your address, simple and she probably stays there often in any event.

According to centerlink a de facto relationship could be defined as even something as simple as living with someone for as little as a month, sharing a number of meals a week and socialising in the same circle of friends.

Qantas have no ability to make you prove anything. Unless they want to court orders and such they can only accept you word for something like defacto. Well they could reject the award booking. But on what basis, the only thing they can go on is the word of the member.

this is my feeling,

as long as you don't abuse the system, maybe its ok,

eg if you have a girlfriend, and as long as you don't change more then say once per year, you should be fine,

and I guess, for safety not interchanging between male and female defactos might be a good thing,

sure, qantas aren't losing anything, ie you earnt the points, so its not as if by nominating a non defacto, then they are losing anything,

so it just seems that maybe you'd be safe if you put your gf down as the defacto, if I broke up with her and the new gf I don't think it would be a problem to buy the ticket for her,

tahts my 2c

what do you mean by this, as in, say that my address and her address BOTH are at her place???? is this so it looks like I live at that address or is there a different intention?

I booked multiple J class segments for my +1 a year ago and blew ~250k points. Although we live together, all her ID (drivers license), bank statements and bills etc remain unchanged with her family home however we flew together.

Anyway, my practical point is, if you are redeeming points for your GF and you are travelling with her on the same flights, I doubt QF would be even blink and eye to check if you are really in a defacto relationship (since you are already travelling together - it must mean something).

Its not like someone hacked into your QF FF account and redeemed all your points for someone unknown.

I'd call a girlfriend a "domestic partner" in most cases.

Regardless, it would be very difficult for one to prove they are in a relationship with someone. My partner and I don't even live in the same state, yet I'm quite sure they're still my "defacto" of 5 years.

I have done it in the past and no one has blinked an eyelid.

I would book an award for her and not even worry about the miniscule risk of being caught out. And even if caught out QF would need to prove that you are not in a de facto relationship. QF has got bigger things to worry about than someone booking award tickets for their friend or girlfriend and not their de facto.

If they believed it not to be valid , all they need to do is cancel the booking and suspend the FF account until the member proves otherwise
