I was wondering if anyone knows whether its possible to transfer top up points, ie purchase top up points on one familly members account and then use points transfer to move them to another account?

Or is this seen as cheating the system? :p

Yes its possible, I bought some and then transferred them (plus what was already in my account) to my wife then we registered for an upgrade to J with her Plat account for our SYD-SFO booking. Made sense as she was Plat and I was only gold. Got the upgrade too!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

DeadlySchnauzer, (interesting name)

Welcome to AFF.

Have a look at this link which covers Top up points and Family transfers (and a few other things).

Frequent Flyer - Using Points

While I am not so sure that it all fits within the rules of purchasing top up points, I don't believe QF can stop it, as far as I know all the points just end up in a point bucket!

straitman, i have pored over that page and the full terms and conditions of top up points and transfers, but is not clear at all whether its possible unfortunately.

its interesting because i assume there must be some tracking of topup points versus regular points so they can enforce the rule of only being able to topup 15% of the points needed for a given award flight.

Anecdotally, there does not appear to be any such tracking happening.

Thats interesting, are there any threads you can point me to where people have discussed this? i did a forum search but couldnt find anything.
Not sure right now.

I believe that you must buy the points against a specific redemption booking. I don't think you can just go on line and buy points then use them where ever.

From the QF site go to the Top Up Points Form (within your profile) and at the bottom you get the following with a tick box to acknowledge.

I have read and I accept the terms and conditions for the purchase of these points. I am purchasing these points for use towards an intended Award flight. The points being purchased do not exceed 15% of the total points required for that Award flight (before rounding up to the closest multiple of 500 points).

I will try to track down a thread on this, but while they make you make that declaration, I do not believe they ever ask which award it is for, or track that you do spend it on a particular award. And in any case, even if you did have to specify an award, it could be gone by the time your points came through, all that you are asked is that at the time of making the purchase you intend to put it towards a award....

This doesn't mean that you should go outside the rules, just that I do not believe they are tracked.

Not sure if anyone noticed but I said YES its possible. The issue lies in the total amount of points that QF will let you purchase. They will only let you buy an amount that gets you to the points required for a reward and only at a maximum of 15%. So if you want to get an award that needs 115,000 points you must have 100,000 points to be allowed to top up to this level.
Once you buy them you can do what you like with them, redeem a flight, transfer the points or do nothing.
