I am planning to fly to Manilla (probably on QF) to pick up a cheap business class airfare to Europe (probably on Qatar). As I understand, transit through passport control and re-check-in can take up to 4 hours. Does anyone know if you have carry on luggage only, weather you can transit in Manlla international airport and pick up a new flight, without having to go through passport control (i.e. stay airside between arriving and departing flights from different airlines)? Many thanks for any help that is available!

Actually no you can't - must go through immig and you will then herded like a small mob of sheep into holding pen then to lift once a group of you cleared then back up airside - it's a unique experience - enjoy.

My research suggests that there is a Transfer Desk system at MNL for your needs. There would be nothing stopping you traveling with cabin baggage only as long as it was within the relevant limits.

The transfer desk is located on the arrivals level at MNL; between gates 1 and 16 before the customs primary line.

And as you've likely identified, you're wanting to travel with cabin bags only as QF will not interline checked baggage to QR if they are on a separate PNR (thus necessitating crossing the customs barrier if you hadfit).

Also make sure you have some money for terminal fees.

App php 750

Not sure what terminal Qatar leave from either.

It will cost app Php 500

If you are returning via the same airport you will need the same amount of money.

It is app 40 pesos to every Aussie dollar.

Many thanks for all of the advice. It seems that there is no way round having a long break between arrival and departure (given the immigaration issue and the well known speed of check-in at MNL) as well as paying the required airport taxes. This makes between airline connections rather difficult on current schedules of my preferred airlines. Hmmm I may have to overnight near the airport....any suggestions?

Hey Sprucegoose. The costs for business class travel to Europe on Qatar are considerably more from BKK. However, it seems that MNL is not conducive to an easy transfer. May look at other transit options (SGN?).

Hi gibbo8,

There is an extensive range of accommodation available within proximity to MNL airport (T1). What is your budget/expectations?

There is the Marriott at the Newport City Complex... I usually visit a few friend when I fly there and stay in Makati but the Marriott is nice, can be pricey though at times!

How much time do your flights give you in between?

Agreed, the Marriott is a great hotel & also the Sofitel Philippine Plaza is another feasible one near to Airport Terminals.

If I fly on my original plans it would only be 1.50 hours between arrival on QF and departure on Qatar. This does not seem to be enough time if I have to go through immigration and re-check, hence the request for nearby hotels. I will check out the Marriott. Thanks.

Good call gibbo8,

Considering my experiences with MNL terminal, you may be running it a bit tight with < 2.00 transit with immi & recheck, interline perhaps, though better to safe guard yourself & of course lessen the possible stress!

Cheers, jl
