I will be flying from Brisbane to Melbourne, transit at the airport and flying off to Brunei. This is my first time I'll transit at Melbourne airport. Do I have to go through customs before catching my connecting flight to Brunei? What do I do once I arrive at the airport?

Welcome to AFF. :D

Brisbane to Melbourne is a domestic flight so you won't be clearing customs in Brisbane.

You will need to do this in Melbourne.

Depending on the carrier and/or if this is all on the one ticket you may or may not need to collect luggage in Melbourne before rechecking.

Transitting in MEL is pretty easy, when you check in BNE find out if they have checked your bags through to Brunei or just through to MEL, they may even be able to give you the boarding pass for Brunei as well...

If they can check your bags all the way through and you have your next boarding pass simply follow the signs to the international terminal when you arrive (all one building so no busses to catch). If they can't check your bags all the way through simply pick up your bags in MEL and recheck them at T2...

You may also be able to get your outbound immi cards at BNE so you can start filling them in there (one less thing to do in MEL)...

For the record I find transitting in MEL much easier and much better than either SYD or BNE...
