I would appreciate some advice for those who transit through the US. I am flying from Australia, on an Australian passport, heading to Central America, pack light (likely to be carrying hand luggage only), flying United all the way. I am trying to figure how much time I will need at LAX and IAH for transit. If anyone has any thoughts...

If you are traveling in Business or First and get to disembark before the rest then it's not too bad. Otherwise clearing custom in LAX can take ages and I'd give at least 2.5 hours for transit to be comfortable

Is this one (PNR) ticket or have tickets been independently purchased

Full stop I would allow 2.5 hours, in J or F you might be the first off the plane, but that doesn't help if your stuck behind 4 or 5 other wide body flights, as there is no express passes. (although I do believe they can expedite clearance for those with connections less than 90 minutes.)

If everything is on the one booking however, you'll be fine, as UA will automatically book you onto other connecting flights if you do miss your connection.

Depends on what other arrivals are at LAX at the time, as an example I usually take QF11 which is an early morning arrival travelling J or Y+, and can be through customs/immigrations in approx 30mins at the most.

Will the travel be on separate tickets?
