Transit Visa in Shanghai

Hi - a newbie on this forum so apologies if this has been asked before, but frankly there is so much information to digest (and some of it is very confusing).

So, we will be flying from Sydney to Shanghai, arriving 1915hrs at Pudong Airport. We have a confirmed reservation at the Ramada Plaza Hotel that night with a confirmed flight to Heathrow with BA at 1100hrs the next day.

My question is, do we require a visa of any description?

Yes. You will require a free 144 hour transit visa. You obtain it on arrival at Pudong.

Since they are only staying for less than 24h, do they need to get the 144h transit visa? Would the procedure be any different, I wonder

You can get the 24h transit visa (or 144 if you want to change your mind and want to explore). Print out paper copies of your onwards flight and hotel details. Wifi is available at the airport however isn't the most obvious to connect - you need to find the wifi kiosk and put in your passport to get the wifi code.

When you reach immigration, go to the right hand side which processes all the transit visas.

Also this might come up - when you come back to the airport the next day, a lot of the entrances look like they're blocked, they're actually not, you just need to go through a security check to enter the aiport (or any mass public transport). Leave plenty of time to go through immigration and security, it can take a while. Also you're checked baggage may be security scanned at checkin as well and you may need to go explain or show some items to an officer.
