Travel Hacks/Tips

I just carry more than 1, and have a spare outside of my wallet if I was really that paranoid. Plus most of the higher end cards will same- or next- day courier a replacement out to you.

But if you read the rest of the posts, it obviously isn't ONLY emergency spend...

I couldn't see anything in the rest of the posts that said spending the emergency stash means it wasn't intended as an emergency stash. It reading those posts it is apparent to me, at least, that some people like to carry cash as their emergency stash while waiting for the replacement card. I can understand that, as SWMBO might be highly disappointed if I was unable to stump up for a handbag on demand.

My travel hack:

If you need to get to NYC from the UK/Europe, fly from Dublin as you clear US customs in Dublin, not JFK (as some of you will know, can and will save a lot of time)

cheers,

Never been to USA, so this is useful as I would like to go to USA next year.

Is this only available in Dublin? Or other ports?

Only supplementary cards. So me losing my card will make her cards useless when they put a hold on the account and reissue the cards.

you need Amex issued cards - will let you reissue either card seperately

I use one of these to hold my credit and other important cards. Clips to a belt or on the inside of trouser waistband.

Saved me in Stockholm when my actual wallet was "lifted".

Not from Europe but from Canada you clear US customs and immigration in Canada - nice out of Vancouver I've found. You will probably have entered the USA before getting to Canada though!

DUB and SNN are both in Europe.

As an aside BA1 from LCY to JFK stops at SNN to refuel and pax clear US customs and immigration. It then lands as a domestic flight at JFK.

Yes, am aware, and YVR is in Canada? Was just sayin'.

Over twenty years ago when I was living in London as a scumbag backpacker, one of the Australian guys in the share house (oh all right - squat) had a run in with the law and had to stay in the UK until his case was heard. He got news of his father being near death and believed he wouldn't be allowed to leave so snuck out of the country via Ireland and got home that way apparently. This is off topic but I just remembered the story. Dunno what happened to him in the end.

Vodafone as mobile phone provider and use $5 Red Roam.

YES. I am loving Vodafone's reasonable roaming. Don't even think twice upon landing now.

Can't remember the last time I went into airplane mode for a whole trip (actually, I can – it was just before all the major carriers all brought in reasonable rates, at varying levels of value).

Only two problems I have found.
First a few countries don't participate. Among them are Malaysia, the UAE, Fiji, Morocco.
Second, Vodafone are clueless about any issues. For example in Thailand the deal only allows access to 3G not 4G data networks. So you need to change your phone settings to stop it connecting to 4G. I figured this out for myself after being told to turn my phone off and on again.
Other than that it's a great deal!

No good in Phils either - but I still would not change for all the tea in China. I had 6 SIM cards at one point in time - Aus, Sing, Indo, China, Phils, USA, now only need Aus - gotta love that.
