Am doing an eastern European trip mid year with friends and will be taking a solo side trip to Romania for a few days while they visit rellies.

Most likely going to fly into Sibiu from Vienna (Tyrolean) and will have a few days to kill; thinking of hiring a car.

* Any tips, cautions, must sees for travelling / driving in (central) Romania? (Lonely Planet is my friend, but always on look-out for AFF knowledge.)

* Anyone used a tour which gives a car and driver type of arrangement?

Cheers

In 2008 we flew into Bucharest. Stayed 2 nights & visited the main tourist spots there ( I am guessing the city life has changed a lot since). We used public transport everywhere. We caught the train to Brasov & had a great time there for 5 nights, just looking around- Visited Poiana, Bran Castle, Sighisoara, Rasnov. Stayed at Guesthouse Postavarului in Brasov & I see it is still getting great reviews.
We then went to Bulgaria & visited Veliko Turnovo (great sound & light show), Plovdiv & Basko.
Can probably find some more details but it was 51/2yrs ago. Reading signage was a test but we handled it & found people very willing to help

I spent a few nights in Bucharest about 8 months ago.
Nice place, fairly muggy so take summer clothes
As for safety I had no worries walking around on my own or with a female, keep your wits about you and keep an eye out for the sketchy people, sometimes they can be laughably obvious but I doubt they're the ones you'd worry about.
The public train/underground system was easy to use and cheap, never had any problems and never had to wait long between trains.

I heard from people I met around the city that the castles and the surrounding areas are beautiful and if it floats your boat I met a lot of people travelling to hike the hills and mountains around Romania
