Re: Travel Insurance Direct Discount Offer

TID are being a pain in the cough with a claim I'm trying to make at the moment.

Travel Insurance Direct Discount Offer

same here.Used to good and fair but now want a receipt for the item i lost. I don't have it because i purchased it 5 years ago. :(

Sounds reasonable that they would ask for it... Can't see what they've done wrong?

Have u got receipts from 5 years ago? I don't. But a photo and a copy of the registration form for it on tomtom should be enough

Actually, the underwrites have done wrong by asking for the receipt and then denying the claim because one was not available. The former is fine, the latter is incorrect and is relying on the insured not being aware of the ins and out of such claims.

It is up to the underwriter to prove one did not lose the item claimed.

Yes I do, as I scan receipts of all valuables for this reason. I gather TID have the right to ask for them. Their PDS (page 35) says

You must give us any information wereasonably ask for to support your claim atyour expense such as, but not limited to, policereports, valuations, medical reports, originalreceipts and proof of ownership. If required, wemay ask you to provide us with translations intoEnglish of such documents to enable us to carryout our assessment of your claim.

Re: Travel Insurance Direct Discount Offer

Its says there 'reasonably'. a receipt request from 5 years ago isn't reasonable.

I guess we can differ in our opinions then. I think it's reasonable for an insurer to ask for a receipt of any age.

Re: Travel Insurance Direct Discount Offer

Fair call Deka. I have just checked the FOS website who suggest that a photo should be sufficient proof of ownership.

Although this sounds like a lot of work when you are already busy planning a trip, the following steps can make it much easier to process your claim:
  • make a list of the items you are taking with you, especially new or expensive items
  • gather up original receipts and credit card statements
  • obtain current valuations for valuable items where possible, or if you can’t find receipts, take photos of these items
  • leave all of this documentation at home, where you can access it in the event you need to make a claim.

I think is is quite reasonable to ask for a receipt of any age ... however I consider it then quite unreasonable to dismiss a claim out of hand merely because a receipt cannot be produced.

In circumstances such as drivatruk's, a receipt can have as much validity as a statutory declaration in a court of law.

FWIW, I do tend to keep receipts - more for warranty than insurance purposes.

Re: Travel Insurance Direct Discount Offer

I supplied them with a photo of the item being used in the USA.
i just annoyed because i feel like I paid for a service in good faith and when i claim i get knocked back in suck a way.

Re: Travel Insurance Direct Discount Offer

I will never buy a TID policy again.

On a trip to China I moved out of my packaged accommodation into a hotel when there were floods that knocked out water and electricity from where I initially was. I therefore made a claim under the "withdrawal of services" section of the policy which provides up to $500 compensation in the event of utilities such as water/power/gas at your accommodation being interrupted.

They knocked back my claim on the basis that I got a letter about the issue from the tour operator rather than the "accommodation manager". As I explained to TID in writing on countless occasions, I could not get a letter from the accommodation manager at the lodge since:

a) They don't speak English
b) My Mandarin is not good enough to argue
c) In their view, the tour company allocated the rooms so it was a matter for them. Moreover, they didn't want to seen to be at fault for me having to move elsewhere during the water/power outage, as under the tour package of course guests are liable to get their own insurance and the accommodation is non-refundable.

Eventually I demanded an internal review, and they reply saying they will get back to me in 14 days. So far all correspondence was by email, but I then learn that the cowards decide to just send a letter in the mail rejecting the claim again instead of email. I am very unhappy with this bunch of jokers and think I will send a complaint to the Ombudsman.

Re: Travel Insurance Direct Discount Offer

TID rejected my claim for my Son's medical expenses overseas (he had some simple IV antibiotic treatment) pointing to a clause saying "notifications in the mass media about epidemics etc" and saying that he should have been immunised. Well the web site they say I 'should' have looked at was Smarttraveller, which says let your Doctor decide what you need and doesn't say anything about Cambodia and typhoid and refers instead to the WHO site which, if you dig long enough, says that typhoid can 'sometimes' be prevalent in Cambodia. My wife is a Medical Doctor and made the decision that he was too small to have immunisation for typhoid. I told them all this and nevertheless they rejected the claim and the appeal. I will never use TID again as they just have enough weasel words in the PDS to get out of paying anything. Be warned.
