The T & C of the Amex Platinum Charge Card insurance state:

Delayed flight departure, flight cancellation, or denied aircraft boarding.
If departure of your Scheduled Flight is delayed for four (4) hours or more, cancelled, or you are denied boarding of the aircraft due to over-booking, and no alternative transportation is made available to you within four (4) hours of the scheduled departure time of such flight, we will reimburse you for hotel accommodation and restaurant meals or refreshments up to AUD700.

Missed flight connection.
If your onward connecting scheduled flight is missed at the transfer point due to the late arrival of your incoming connecting scheduled flight, and no alternative transportation is made available to you within four (4) hours of the actual arrival time of the incoming flight, we will reimburse you for hotel accommodation and restaurant meals or refreshments up to AUD700.

Exactly.

Doesn't cover the cost of a new ticket on another flight to make it to your final destination.

Most travellers do so on the one booking/PNR and there is no need for such insurance.

The issue is that if the booking is on the one ticket and you misconnect, the airlines have to protect your travel (e.g. by rebooking a later flight). They don't necessarily have to arrange accommodation (that depends upon the circumstances of the misconnect).

So while TI may cover such accommodation costs, there is rarely provision in a TI policy for misconnects. To be competitive the TI underwriters do not include such cover to reduce premium costs.)

On separate flight bookings the airlines have no such responsibility and since this type of cover is not included in most policies you are on your own.

I wonder about how they define "connecting"? Technically, flights on separate bookings/PNRs are not connecting flights as far as most of the airline industry is concerned.

Aside from the accommodation and F/B; there is no cover noted there should one need to pay for new flights when one is missed.
