Not surprising due to the virus spread in japan! Also the games is to buy time for possible military action on China! We've just been told that no spectators will be allowed at any of the Greater Tokyo venues.
All done behind the scenes now.The IOC has also restructured the bidding process to make it easier and cheaper

Rio is a perfect example of disused olympic facilities. Could someone explain the connection between Brazil and Golf?Equestrian centres, softball compounds and man-made rapids are not particularly useful beyond their immediate function.

But what's Brazil's connection to Golf? You would be one of the few people to play golf in Brazil.. Beware of the crocodiles in the vicinity...I'll be playing golf at the Olympic course in Rio.
That's sort of like asking what's the worlds connection to golf. There are golf courses in about 160 countries, many you would probably ask the same question about. I've played golf in 70 of them. (Belarus, Jordan, Egypt, Tonga, Laos... you could ask the same question about them)But what's Brazil's connection to Golf? You would be one of the few people to play golf in Brazil.. I'd also say that having sports like golf, tennis, basketball - where athletes are already well known and/or rich, distracts and detracts from sports where the Olympics are the pinnacle, like fencing, rowing, equestrian, archery, track and field, etc. I know I'd love to watch those far more.
Absolutely. But at the expense of eyeballs on the other sports, sadly. The IOC sold their soul a long time ago.I think those sports were introduced so that more people will watch the Olympics. At the end it is all about money.
Otherwise why they are considering bringing cricket to Olympics in the future? it is all about the market at the sub-continent.
The issue here is that Olympics has been so expensive to run, with all these new facilities being built, you need “popular “ sports to ensure enough eyeballs are watching, which in turn translate to TV rights values.Absolutely. But at the expense of eyeballs on the other sports, sadly. The IOC sold their soul a long time ago.
At the expense of local infrastructure/services which would have benefited a lot more people than the very few in Rio who can play golf. But at the expense of eyeballs
I don't think there's a city on earth that could host the games if the selection criteria included "does not need to improve local infrastructure/services". Building the course probably created many jobs. Maintaining and operating the course also continues to provide employment for a significant number too, probably more than you think. And having a world class course brings in tourists too (see above), so the benefits might be a bit more far-reaching than you think. At the expense of local infrastructure/services which would have benefited a lot more people than the very few in Rio who can play golf.
…. Especially in Rio…
Yep. Crazy amounts of money. I'm reminded of a joke (?) that I can't fully remember about the cost of the London games by a British comedian whose name I can't remember, that ended with "...but you can't put a price on a bronze medal in cycling". It'll be interesting to watch the budgeting for BNE2032.The issue here is that Olympics has been so expensive to run, with all these new facilities being built, you need “popular “ sports to ensure enough eyeballs are watching, which in turn translate to TV rights values.

I was lamenting over this the other day! I feel like Brisbane might be my new target as well (along with half the country).Such a shame reading the OP from 2 years ago, to how different things are today. I missed out on experiencing the 2000 Olympics first hand, will definitely be heading up to Brisbane for 2032 for the canoe slalom.
The MCG southern stand is due for redevelopment starting 2030, might be brought forward if needed for Soccer in 2032.
Then there are those which should be in the Olympics.I'm simply suggesting that golf doesn't belong at the Olympics, not just the Rio games.
