I prefer the west coast, it still has the frontier atmosphere but then mining and transport I find interesting.
couple of things on the west coast.
The key hole tunnel, it has an engineering monument but you have to drive through to see it. It's know as the Spray Tunnel and narrow at the bottom and wide at the top like a key hole to allow wide loads though on a railway flat car. You head across the Zeehan golf course and suddenly you are driving on an old railway embankment, just follow it. Beware it can be muddy inside and being narrow at the bottom means in a large 4wd you might not be able to open the doors if you get bogged. But in several visits I've never had a problem.
The Zeehan museum I think is one of the better country museums I've been to in Australia, it had (hope it still has) one of the best mineral collections in Australia mostly mostly donated by Renison Goldfields the past owners of the Mt Lyell Mining and Railway Co.
and the Lake Margaret hydro power station, you go up the the huge door and press the door bell and the man on duty will show you around. There is also the tramway trail there which you can walk along and see the wood stave pipeline which has been rebuilt and still in use.
